Alex Setzer is a fine arts photographer and cinematographer from Baltimore, MD, working in New York.

Alex attended the Maryland Institute College of Art for two years, pursuing degrees in Photography and Graphic Design, before relocating to New York and continuing his studies at the School of Visual Arts in the BFA Photography and Video program.

Influenced by cinema, Alex approaches his photographs in a way that is similar to that of a director, employing lighting and production techniques like those used on a film set.

The surreal, psychological narratives in Alex’s constructed photographs are inspired by long nighttime drives through the illusory landscape of the suburbs outside of the neighborhood he grew up in. In the photographs, light and color are used as narrative devices to intensify the tensions between the character and their environment, and project the internal conflict and anxieties of the character onto the scene.
