About Me

Hello there my name is Steven Yang and I am a photographer who is looking to expand my portfolio by working with models.

Experience:

I started taking interest in professional photography when I was 19, when I got my first DSLR. In the second year of college, I started working with the school newspaper and taking photos. It was a success as many photos were featured and I got one photo cover. Disappointed with the science industry, I switched my major from biology to photography and transferred to Brooks Institute in California, which eventually closed down in 2016 because of financial difficulties before I had time to finish my degree. During my time in Brooks, I learned all the basic skills of commercial photography, mostly lighting and post processing. I am comfortable with all camera formats (film & digital, medium format and view cameras). In late 2016 I went back to China and started an internship at a local newspaper as a photojournalist. I had some photos and videos published but I didn't enjoy doing news and documentaries. And then I started freelancing a bit, shooting mostly portraits before I went to a catering company to be a food photographer, shooting their menus and ads. Again, I didn't enjoy shooting food so I left the company in March, 2018.

I finally found out that fashion photography is what I wanted to do because I like the beauty of the models with the combination of good clothes. It is the highest form of portrait photography and it just draws you in when I see the big ad billboards and read fashion magazines.

Right now I am focused on doing more tests shoots to expand my portfolio and get ready for my fashion career.

Goals:

Grow as a fashion photographer and break into the fashion and editorial world. Do personal works at the same time and prepare for exhibitions and photobooks.

Artist Statement:

I've always believed in "less is more". Simple composition helps you to focus on the model. If there's no charisma in the model, I won't take a shot because for me, the model is 90% of the photo. Simple and inherent beauty is what I am after.

I shot mostly portraits up till now and am really looking forward to working with models. A selection of my best work is available on my website:
