Growing up, I would seek out role models in the fashion industry that looked like me and struggled to find them. Dove’s ‘Evolution’ ad came out when I was 14 and had a profound impact on me. I think I’ve known since then that I’ve wanted to be part of the #realbeauty movement. But it wasn’t until recently that I realized how. My passion for body positivity put me on the hunt for representation as a curve model. I finally feel like I have a platform to promote body diversity and confidence and shed light on areas where the fashion industry still has work to do. In 2019, we’ve come a long way. The representation of curvy women in the media is higher now than it’s been in years with women like Ashley Graham and Hunter McGrady leading the charge, but we’re still typically seeing women who are curvy in all the 'right' places. Though some brands are starting to expand their sizing and offer larger women more options, many retailers are still only offering extended sizing online. We need equal, true representation of women of all shapes and sizes. And if my confidence and comfort in my body makes other women feel more confident and comfortable in theirs, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.
