I love to photograph beauty. That may sound like a cliché, but after multiple careers in the military, in teaching, in ministry, and in writing (yes, I am really, really old, but not yet fully decrepit), I have seen more than my share of grit and human reality as well as ugliness. If the saying is true that the eye is a window to the soul, or to a person's personality or character, I am challenged and fascinated the opportunity to be a portrait photographer. I have a background in film and large format, but now shoot digital, mostly black and white, but also, occasionally, color. I believe that each photograph that I take of a person reveals something of who that person is, that is much more than the sum total of skin color and texture, their hair and makeup, their clothing style, and the setting or background the photo was taken in. And that's true of beauty as well. I look for and see the beauty in people, and portrait photography, if done well, is honest in a way that few other media are.
