Born in Paterson, NJ, Desiree Monae always knew she wanted to work in the arts.
During her career, she has served in various positions for many creative organizations. She served as Box Office and House Lights Coordinator and Usher at the American Musical Dramatic Academy (AMDA) from 2010 to 2012. In 2013, Desiree was the Assistant Stage Manager Technician in Audio Production for New York City’s Girl Be Heard. The following year, she was Director/Producer for Love Creek Productions in the New York City region. Currently, Desiree is a Producer, Director, Screenwriter, and Editor for her filmmaking company, Monae Productions, which she launched in March 2015. She is also the Creator and Director for Cocina De Soul, a vegan food company based in New York City.

From 2010 through 2012, Desiree attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), earning an Associate of Arts in acting. She was involved in various activities, including stage combat, voice, and speech. Desiree attended The New School from 2013 to 2016, earning a BS in Liberal Arts and Sciences and a 3.9 GPA. She was involved in the screenwriting club. Desiree currently attends The New School, working toward earning an MFA in David Lynch Screenwriting and an MA in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management. She has a 3.82 GPA and serves on the University Student Senate. Desiree is highly skilled in screenwriting, directing, and producing film and television. Additional professional skills include Adobe Creative Suite and Adobe Premiere Pro.

While attending AMDA, a lifelong struggle was awakened. Desiree was constantly reminded of her ethnic background and worried about this being the basis of her acting career. During her last semester, 98% of her class was African-American. She was told this was a strategic plan to give a taste of what students would experience post-graduation in the real world. This left an unsettling feeling in her heart. She thought, “Isn’t acting about portraying the truth in the human experience? Why should my entire career be centered around my race?” It was then that Desiree was motivated to establish her own filmmaking company, eventually founding Monae Productions and her vegan foods company, Cocina De Soul.

Monae Productions has spurned the release of CELLphone(short) and BLUFF. Currently, Desiree is working on her original screenplay and tv production, Bluff.
