OUR PHILOSOPHY ON BEAUTY AND ART

Beauty. Is this the first characteristic of a work of art? That it pleases us. Whatever else it does, be it interesting, informative, supportive of many worthy purposes, please us it must. And genuinely: we cannot be reasoned into changing our emotions. But since many things give us pleasure — gratification of the senses, sexual encounters, the sunlight on in early morning — we have also to ask what is specific about aesthetic pleasure. No one has been wholly successful in answering this question, but several attempts have been made throughout history. The chief forms of beauty, said Aristotle, are order, symmetry and definition  Beautiful things please by proportion, said St. Augustine.  Harmony in variety is beauty, suggested the painter William Hogarth.  A close association between perception of an object and the feelings it arouses in the mind or the body, decided Hume.  But in all the concepts that have been invented to explain what beauty is we at Thompson Studios tend to go along with Margaret Wolfe Hungerford (née Hamilton), who wrote many books, often under the pseudonym of 'The Duchess'. In Molly Bawn, 1878, there's the line "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and that is all that really matters, isn't it.

Every woman has a “seductive” angle--than lends itself to the inspiration of an artist.  We search for those angles, as well as for the perfect light and the perfect garment to illuminate her.

Certainly I appreciate the beauty of light upon alabaster skin, high cheekbones, half-closed eyes —all which seem to correspond to the sense of what we call beauty.

However, I feel all women are, and can be made to feel beautiful.  And I hope that in some small way we can make them to feel beautiful through the inspiration and creativity that we bring to our clients and help them feed on that inspiration and carry it on throughout the rest of their lives wherever their paths may lead.

So that they may then beheld as beautiful in their own eyes.
