About Me

HIEWS is a collaboration of professionals hosting a series of workshops both in the U.S. and in Europe specializing in photography and filmmaking. We plan on expanding to other parts of the world by the end of 2011. Our site will be used as a networking platform for sharing information and to showcase the work of visionary artists. This site is created for photographers, filmmakers, retouchers, editors and anyone working in the moving and still visual fields. We are promoting unity and the sharing of knowledge through the arts in the Twenty-First Century . . . welcome.
After many months of late night discussions with my dear friend and highly regarded retoucher Natalia Taffarel about the lack of willingness to share information in the creative industries, an idea came to me. In an industry known as extremely competitive and tight lipped, Natalia became one of the most sought after hi-end retouchers not only for her technique but for her willingness to help others by posting video tutorials and speaking freely in forums, essentially teaching everything she knew to anyone who would benefit. As a photographer based in New York City I was very grateful to have her as a collaborator on my work. There is a code of silence that doesn’t sit well with me. The “what you see in this studio, stays in this studio” mentality is the norm and I feel it only adds a negative aura around the set. I began to think about how to make a difference and shake things up by creating a platform for people to share secrets in the photography and filmmaking mediums. I have always been very interested in filmmaking techniques and it has always been at the forefront of my inspiration both stylistically and in storytelling.
With the unveiling of Canon’s 5D Mark 2 and Red Digital Cinema’s RED ONE, independent film will never be the same. The indie film world has become the stomping grounds for creative minds all over the world, many of which didn’t have much of a voice that could be heard until now. It became quite clear to me that this was the most exciting period in my lifetime with so much thriving creativity that I felt I had to “inhale” as much information as possible, I didn’t want to blink in fear that I might miss something. I would spend hours and hours, day and night searching the web for tutorials or behind the scenes videos on these mediums. This presented one problem, it’s scattered about everywhere and I found that the majority were very rudimentary, rarely did I run across anything I found very useful on a professional level. During this period I moved to Europe only to hear the same complaints. The web is infinitely big so finding all of the information in one place proved to be impossible. It became evident that the need for a “one stop shop” to get all of the current and best information was here. So after months of planning, I decided to create a site that would enable people to upload their films, tutorials, editorials, behind the scenes videos, critiques . . . .you name it. With Natalia’s help, we have brought together some of our most successful and recognized colleagues in these fields to not only contribute BTS videos, blogs and step by step tutorials, but to guest host HIEWS workshops being held in both the U.S. and Europe with plans on expanding around the world by the end of 2011. We encourage everyone to contact us with contributions of videos and/or postings that are both current and relevant to these fields. Enjoy the site and register for updates on our workshops coming near you . . .
