About Me

Immortalize a Memory With a Painting -- a person, a bridge, city landmark, pet, bicycle, cars, motorcycle or something important to you. Send me a picture of a viewpoint or a subject that you would like painted. If you are in the Portland Oregon area Christopher B. Mooney can take photos of the subject of your painting if you don't have one you love. Start the conversation, email a photo of what you want painted.

Christopher B. Mooney has been an oil painter for over 30 years. His paintings are large scale and representational. Mooney spent most of his career making a name for himself as a painter focused on industrial buildings, most notably bridges. After spending many years as a distant observer of man-made forms he is now drawn to depicting the human form. Mooney’s portraits range from faces, to full figures, to couples in tender moments. Although industrial steel bridges and the playful embrace of a lover may seem on the surface two disparate topics, they are both at their core about connection.

His portraits of couples reveal moments of affection – glimpses into the intimacy that the subjects feel. Their bodies are connected through touch- an arm on a shoulder, a shared joke. They lean into one another and connect. A bridge does this. A bridge touches down on one side of a river and then it reaches out and touches the other side. The connection is strong and grounded and the exchange between both sides is now fluid and has a sense of accomplishment as well as ease. A bridge connects communities, groups of people. It’s as if it was always there. Likewise, in his portraiture, these bodies, the people, were always connected. Christopher B. Mooney’s work, quite literally, bridges the gap.

Mooney has a BFA in illustration with a minor in photography from Parson’s School of Design, New York, New York. His work has been the subject of numerous group and solo exhibitions. He was a member of Portland Open Studios, The Rental Sales Gallery, Gallery 114, and has won several awards for his paintings. The Arts Council of Lake Oswego, OR invited Mr. Mooney to curate a group show: “Transitions”- Featured artwork by Don Bishop, Eric Boyer, Michael Orwick, and Christopher B. Mooney. The St John’s Bridge painting appeared in the residence of the Grimm, the locally produced television series. His work, Cityscape was used as the cover and poster publicizing the book, Rental Sales Gallery, Portland Art Museum, the First 50 Years, in 2009. His work has been featured in Hawthorne Bridge, Celebrating 100 Years in Art and Words, a 2010 calendar supporting the Hawthorne Bridge Centennial Celebration. He completed a project grant Tribute: Portraits of Working Heroes on the Light Rail Bridge. Funded in part by RACC (regional Arts & Culture Council), a visual artistic record of the building of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Willamette River Bridge using portraits of the working people such as designers, engineers, builders, and contractors who are participating in the project.
