All the Canon lenses start at F3.5. Anyone have a F/2.8? If so, what manuf and are you happy with it?

I just bought a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS USM ($1000 used) and really like it for that range. I also have as my walk around lens the Canon 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM ($500 new).

My friend shoots with a Tamron 28-75 2.8 DI ($400 new), which I'm looking at as my next lens.

I use the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 as my main lens. I think it would be difficult to top it with the 20D.

You'll find most of the f/2.8 are rather spendy depending. Though you could pick up a Canon 50mm f/1.8 Rather cheap ( under 100$ ), the kit lens was more or less meant for your average joe, semi-versitile use, not so much a more defined market, so f/3.5 @ 18mm seemed reasonable, and cost-effective.

I myself own.

18-55 f/3.5-f/5.6 (never use it though)
Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk2 (almost all the time , under 100$)
Canon 28-135 USM IS (only for far subjects, as its sharper than most my other lens past 15 ft, bout 300 to 400 $)
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 1:1 Macro (The other one I use almost exclusivly , round 300$)

If you want a fast lens but dont want to pay too much, look at primes, they're generally faster, sharper and lighter than most of their equivilant priced zoom lens.

I thought canon offered an L-series 2.8 straight-through in that focal range.

17-85? though thats f/4.5-f/5.6

There is a Canon 24-70 @ f/2.8 , and a Canon 16-35 @ f/2.8 , though the 17-40 is at f/4.

my 2 cents..

Depending on what you are shooting.  But I essentially use 2 lenses for my shots.  Canon 50mm f1.4  and Canon 85mm f1.8.  I have the 18-55mm kit lens rarely use it.  I always thought a lens was just a lens.  I couldn't have been farther from the truth.  I tried out my friends 70-200 f2.8 L lens.  I did some studio shots with it.  When I got home, and looked at my images, I almost fell out of my chair.  The images were soo SHARP I could see the tiny hair on the model's lips.  I could count her eye lashes on her head shot.  Thats when I decided to go with the 50mm and the 85mm.  I would go with L lenses but can't afford them yet.  So I have to use the fixed length lenses.  But they are just as sharp if not sharper then L lenses.  As long as you know how to focus them.

What are you talking about? Canon makes a whole bunch of lenses at f/1.4, 1.8, and 2.8. Many of their "L" series zooms are f/2.8. Mind you, the f/2.8 zooms are pretty spendy, but there are several of them easily found.

I would be reluctant to buy a third party lens. There have been numerous cases of third party lenses that don't work when Canon comes out with a new camera (they have to reverse engineer the electronics, which change sometimes on new cameras). If the third party lens is recent, they will often re-chip the lens for free. But if the lens is older or out of production, or you bought it used, you may end up with an optical doorstop, because it my not work on the 30D (or whatever Canon calls it's next DSLR).

I'm very happy with the Sigma 18-50 2.8 for the price of it you can't go wrong and the image quality is impressive. AF isn't as good as the Canon 24-70 or the Sigma 24-70 but its bearable.

Thanks for the info on third party lens.  I got several because they are lighter and cheaper.  Also for some reason the Canon Flash is good up to 105MM.  I have  28-135mm IS and F/2.8 75-200mm L Canon lenses.  I had problems shooting at long distance.  It seems that the canon flash have problems reaching over 105mm.  I called Canon support and they said they don't know why.
