Hey All,

I'm just wondering...  I see shots that are at cool locations - such as bars, or stairwells etc.   for those of you who do them, are you bringing strobes? work lights? or just using what's available?

and if you are bringing lights - do you have assistants who are helping you?

thanks,

Julia

Hi Julia,

Depending on the requirements of the shoot on location, I will work with either a set of Q-flashes with Turbo batteries, or a number of studio lights.  Alien Bees work great with a vagabond battery pack when a/c is not available.  At weddings and events the battery pack is also good to use---no power cord going across the floor for people to trip over.

Assistant to help out?  Depends on the shoot....Simple stuff, no----for larger jobs, I've had as many as five assistants to work on the same job.

If I'm in a location with power and a controlled environment then I'll bring my own light kit - a Dynalite 1000w/s pack with anywhere from 1 to 4 heads, depending on what I'm expecting to shoot.  Basic lighting bag also has a softbox or two, a Photek 60" Softlighter, two or three umbrellas, a Gelly Roll, LiteDiscs, etc.  If I'm making my own light I tend to travel a little heavy, just to make sure I can do whatever I want or need to.  It's a terrible feeling seeing the shot you want but not having the tools to achieve it.

Yes, no, yes. smile

Depending on what and where I'm shooting, I'll bring a couple of battery-powered flashes (Sunpak 544's); an 800 watt-second pack, some heads, and a wheeled battery unit; up to 6000 watt-seconds of packs, heads, and monolights; or just reflectors. Eeverything heavy is on wheels or in wheeled cases.

Sometimes, usually for the shoots requiring more artificial light. I'll often draft any 'escorts' to help, at the smaller shoots, and they've all been apparently glad to do so, but I make sure I don't bring more than I can handle by myself in that situation, Just In Case.
