I'm not sure... would it be fair to say that a beauty shot is a headshot with more context?  Headshots are generally about the model.  Beauty shots are about the the makeup, mood, some sort of storyline, without necessarily being editorial.  I'd say a cosmetics or skin care ad would be a beauty shot, because there's a story there.  Something other than the model is being sold.

Skin care or cosmetics is a perfect example.

I would add that, in my opinion, beauty shots are generally more high key lighting of the face. I don't feel the background needs to be bright, but there should be much less dramatic shadow on the model. Portrait headshots use shadow to accentuate the features of the subject, where beauty shots rely on evenly lit faces with fantastic makeup and a flawless appearance. There are, of course, always exceptions.

I agree with EmElle and Roshar and illustrate Michael's opinion. Context is everything. Here's exceptional and exception.

Aw, come on! It's just Nerlande... you get used to her after a while. Sure.     ;-)

****
seems to me a 'beauty shot' is meant to represent a slice of the iconic, desired fabulousness of 'the female face' (or male, whatever), and give the viewer a longing for the feminine... and a longing to buy any/all products associated with the image

so... great eyes, lips, skin, (and therefore: makeup, photoshop), posed slightly aloof and anonymous. not a story, not a personality. not tittilating. not sports. not journalism. not paris hilton! though there's plenty of celeb/beauty hybrids, huh? hmmmm...

A beauty shot is about . . . (drum roll) the beauty of the model and the model's skin!

Often, it is a close-up of the model's face emphasizing great skin and/or hair and beautiful makeup and/or hairdressing - as in:

or

However, the skin pictured need not necessarily be on the model's face: (warning: naked human being - 18+ old viewers please) https://img2.modelmayhem.com/051105/22/ … 248210.jpg

When I think of beauty shot I want to see a clean non cluttered image of the models features. To me it is one of the most important selling points of a models card or book.

For MUA's it is what I ask to see. Too many beginning  MUA's try to load up their books on all this freaky, edgy, editorial stuff but it is the MUA who can deliver a clean beauty shout is one one who gets the gig most of the time.

Here are a few.

A "beauty" shot is one that showcases your makeup, a tight framed picture of the face.... It doesn't have to be beautiful makeup, it can be edgy, pretty, freaky ect... Just has to be a tight framed shot of the face showcasing your work... Some examples of my work that are my "beauty" shots

lol this turned into a thread of everyone showing their beauty shots. woohoo! big_smile Anyways, there are many fine examples. Please be sure when you do finally get one that you at LEAST have one straight on to the camera. Having gone through your port and seeing you already don't have a straight clear beauty shot, it would bug me to see finally one beauty shot, with your head turned away again! lol. In fact try to set up a shoot with a bunch of various head positions, hopefully with more than one look. Whoever mentioned you needed a headshot for your port may really have just been wanting to see a clear picture of your features close up. No harm in that. Good luck.

Oh! And don't understimate the importance of having the hair off the face, whether back or styled, to show off the angles/features of your face.

Sorry Nerlande... You completely missed the context. Odine's Eye told me that my example wasn't a beauty shot because, in his opinion, you noticed her nose before her mouth. Then you posted your picture, so I made the joke "OMG Look at her nose." Get it? :-) I always make the mistake of assuming that people are reading all the posts and get in trouble that way.

Beauty shots can be shot indoors or out.  Most are usually shot indoors where the lighting can be more easily controlled.  Lighting is usually flat, the models skin is usually porcelain like and then think of shots that would be used to sell makeup items like lipsticks, eyeliner, powders, hair color, jewelry, etc.

PS.....  the image below is the only sample that I had in my port.  It has not been retouched at all.  If this were going to print, the photo would appear much cleaner.

It's been suggested that I should add a few(beauty shots) to my portfolio, but I'm not quite sure what they are versus headshots or glamed up images. I have, thus far, had to do my own make-up, hair and wardrobing....so I'm needing some help. If anyone could post some examples or tell me roughly what the look (wardrobe, make-up and hair) is it would be great help. I'm planning a couple shoots shortly and would like to add this style image onto the initerary.

Thank You So much!

I totally lacked in the beauty area for my port and just did these last week.  The following would be considered 'beauty shots'

Hope this helps!

When I think of a beauty shot, I think of a clean close up shot.  Like the covergirl ads.  I don't think the makeup should look overdone.  Here are some examples of my interpretation of beauty shots.

I think of the above as beauty shots, yes, but more specifically "clean beauty" shots. You can have beauty shots that are more about the makeup and overall look. I've always considered "beatuy shots" to be any kind of shots that specifically focus on the makeup - whether it's clean , dramatic, or in between.

Beauty shots are usually studio work, IMHO, and emphasise the model's beauty or the beauty of her makeup/hair rather than her character. I would tend to regard these as 'beauty' shots

The other close-up shots in my port are either headshots or portraits but, again, deciding where to draw the line is very difficult.

My whole third and 4th row on here are beauty shots along with half the last row. Makeup artists should have a number of beauty shots to showcase their work.

Very simply it's an image in which makeup/the face is the star. It can vary from very natural to very dramatic, but ultimately the "beauty" of the face is the focus. It's usually either a close-up or a "head-and-shoulders" shot, but even that can vary. Don't confuse Jewelry ads (necklaces, earrings or other accessories) with beauty shots.

I notice this is a very old thread . . .

I do need to point out that the meaning of the term "beauty shot" depends on who is saying it, and for what purpose.

In fashion circles it means something pretty specific, and generally follows some of the definitions given here.  In commercial print modeling it means something very different, more analogous to a cross between a portrait and a headshot.  The emphasis is not, ever, on makeup or styling, since they should be very natural.  Rather, it's on an attractive, natural looking shot of the face of the model.
