What you have written is about as coherent as anything you've posted in English. I think you mean "Tacos ala Rosa" as in "Chuletas de Codero ala Plancha."

Actually, I'm with Doug. I think its cool to learn your stuff, understand why people did or do things a certain way, and THEN toss em all out, make your own, rebreak your own etc. There is a certain psychology and reason behind the 'so called rules'.

I'd like to see a thread of teachings (i hate the word rules) that people DO like..such as the rule of thirds, sunny 16, composition etc.

Light has no "rules", it follows "laws of nature".  Try breaking them if you like.

Composition and aesthetics have "rules of thumb" for very good reasons--they capture attention.  In this case it's a lot like driving a car.  You should learn the rules so at least you know when you are breaking them, otherwise you are sure to crash and burn.

Here is a tried and true thought process involved with creating a strong image: determine what your subject is, try to do something that will draw attention to your subject, then eliminate distractions.  Do whatever you like with these things in mind and you will make images that demand attention.  Disregard if that is not your objective.

I liked Do not panic.

Poison Ivy thing was good.  Also do not have drunk suck-face session during surf party(non-photo business related) in poison ivy.

Brush your teeth.  Especially for the makeup artists and stylists.

or as Rodney King said "people can't we all just brush our teeth."

To models-- Do not speak nasty about the photographer thinking he does not understand the language you are speaking.

Don't look to other people for approval, or validation. Make your own path.

Take off the lens cap.

Since rule #1 "take the lens cap off" & #2 "turn on the camera" have already been taken...

Rule #3 - Always have a plan.

Rule #4 - Be flexible enough that when your plan does go to hell (which it usually does), you can improvise & still get the job done.

I like your example.

I drive a stick shift, and I don't think about pushing the clutch or choosing a gear. I think about where I want to go, and the rest just happens. I've done it so much, that the rules behind the mechanics have become second nature. It's like breathing.

As a musician, I practiced scales and exercizes so that the rules of theory and technique would be second nature, and I could focus on creating music when I performed.

As a photographer, I am always looking for new techniques to throw into my bag of tricks. Sometimes I find a rule, guideline, technique, etc.. that works for me.

Regardless of what rules you apply, I think the main point is to internalize it and understand it so that you can forget about it and focus on the work.

I wrote some "Rules of Filmmaking" down...

http://www.starfortress.com/filmrules.html

They don't all cross over to photography but a couple do, like the one about investors and lunch.

However if I intend on breaking the rules then knowing them wont really matter thereby taking us back to the there are no rules thinking.

And hey you can do a lot of things that attract attention. ANYTHING outside of the norm attracts attention.

These are wise words!  There is no way you can truly free yourself to accomplish your art when the focus is learning the techniques!  The driving example is perfect!  Race car drivers are not thinking about the mechanics of driving, they are focused on the finish line and their car is an extension of their desire!

Music is a good example also!  It doesn't matter the symphony you hear in your head, if you didn't pay your practice dues, you will not be able to express it.

So, realistically, the better you know the "rules", the further you will be able to transcend them with your vision.  Otherwise, you just might be repeating the tired old vision of others....

Besides, if you don't know you are breaking rules, it's just not as much fun!

Mike here's one more thing to consider:
if you have an " artistic style", you've made up and are following a series of rules or procedures smile
presence of style is actually abscence of freedom
how is that?
