May 27 05 09:58 am Link Don't do a shoot where there is poison ivy. May 27 05 10:41 am Link Learn the 'rules' before breaking them. I think its cool to learn your stuff, understand why people did or do things a certain way, and THEN toss em all out, make your own, rebreak your own etc. There is a certain psychology and reason behind the 'so called rules'. Trust me on this, Don't even MENTION basic photgraphic knowledge here, it's more headache than it's worth!!! May 27 05 12:09 pm Link Light has no "rules", it follows "laws of nature". Try breaking them if you like. Composition and aesthetics have "rules of thumb" for very good reasons--they capture attention. In this case it's a lot like driving a car. You should learn the rules so at least you know when you are breaking them, otherwise you are sure to crash and burn. Here is a tried and true thought process involved with creating a strong image: determine what your subject is, try to do something that will draw attention to your subject, then eliminate distractions. Do whatever you like with these things in mind and you will make images that demand attention. Disregard if that is not your objective. May 27 05 03:24 pm Link Prefers guidelines, not rules May 27 05 03:36 pm Link RULE #1: DONT FORGET TO TAKE THE LENS CAP OFF. May 27 05 05:58 pm Link "If you cannot imitate them, do not copy them." Yogi Berra "In the time it takes to settle for less you could have done with what you thought would be best." Missing Persons I liked Do not panic. Poison Ivy thing was good. Also do not have drunk suck-face session during surf party(non-photo business related) in poison ivy. Brush your teeth. Especially for the makeup artists and stylists. or as Rodney King said "people can't we all just brush our teeth." To models-- Do not speak nasty about the photographer thinking he does not understand the language you are speaking. May 27 05 06:15 pm Link Don't look to other people for approval, or validation. Make your own path. E May 28 05 04:34 am Link Posted by theda: Since rule #1 "take the lens cap off" & #2 "turn on the camera" have already been taken... May 31 05 10:20 am Link Posted by Jim Goodwin: In this case it's a lot like driving a car. You should learn the rules so at least you know when you are breaking them, otherwise you are sure to crash and burn. However if I intend on breaking the rules then knowing them wont really matter thereby taking us back to the there are no rules thinking. Jun 01 05 08:09 pm Link Posted by XtremeArtists ®: Posted by Jim Goodwin: I like your example. These are wise words! There is no way you can truly free yourself to accomplish your art when the focus is learning the techniques! The driving example is perfect! Race car drivers are not thinking about the mechanics of driving, they are focused on the finish line and their car is an extension of their desire! Jun 12 05 09:08 pm Link Mike here's one more thing to consider: if you have an " artistic style", you've made up and are following a series of rules or procedures presence of style is actually abscence of freedom how is that? V. Jun 13 05 12:12 am Link My only rule: Rules are for fools.. Jun 13 05 05:19 am Link ALWAYS treat your assistant like an assistant. Jun 13 05 08:44 am Link |
