If a model is interested in doing print for magazines like Maxim and FHM...how does she go about doing it. I have an agency but they arent really doing anything for me at the moment.

First, let me say this is only my best guess, but I wanted to post to keep this at the top.

My initial instinct might be to simply contact the magazines you wish to be in, find out the name of their art director, and send pictures in either electronically or per their directions.

I've seen many girls from OMP and MM be in FHM for various things, so it's not impossible.

Hopefully, there is a model or photographer on ths site with direct experience who can provide some clear insight into your request.

Christina, Good for you, because you are taking the first step by asking!

As far as you are concerned, I'm just another photographer wannabe ... I don't have the answers and I am not even close in proximity to where you are. BUT I can tell you this much ... research it! Google the names of models you see in the magazines and find out what agencies they work with. Contact people who are involved with the magazine to ask them how you could get in as a model. Keep it friendly and ask the questions that might seem naive or dumb to some ... but you wont know the answers unless you ask!

As you get information, don't take it as the only "way" either because you are researching how others got there but you may do it in a slightly different way.

Best wishes!

The first thing you might want to do is remove the reference to the modeling school and don't ever mention that to a real agency or anyone in the industry. It will only reflect poorly on you at best.

Second, you have the height, stats and are pretty, so you should try to get with a real agency if the one you have is BS. There is at least one good one in Philly that I'm aware of: http://www.reinhardagency.com/

See what they say, maybe they can work you and maybe they wouldn't think it best for you overall to do that kind of work, or maybe they can help you get that kind of work.

Sometimes you need to be proactive with your agency, remind them you're around, pay a visit, ask about castings. Or you might need to find another booker or agency that's more enthusiastic about you & will send you out for more things.

As long as doing it at all isn't the wrong thing to do, than some of the other advice here about making contact might work too.

Get with an agency who will GET YOU THAT WORK! Or get out there and try to get it yourself. Just like Matthew said, contact the magazines yourself.

Just wanted to let you know that I will be in FHM this month, and all I did was have my photographer send in my pics to the magazine!  He also submitted me to Maxim, and Playboy, but we just heard back from FHM as of right now.  So definitely market yourself...it will pay off!

Wendy,

How much are you getting paid for FHM?

FHM pays? I though they just printed radicaly altered pictures with false quotes and expected you to be thrilled with the "exposure"?

I've had 1 model make the FHM 20 hot dates, and 2 models hit the Hometown Hotties.  None of them got paid for that, and the photographer gets no credit for those shots.  One of the girls for Maxim though did get an additional email from them saying that they would like to put her into some other shoots.

As was said before FHM and Maxim often do not pay for many of their shoots.

Does the model know this?

Because that is one of the reason that an agency may not be hunting down such magazines for not much for the model and no profit for agency.  No direct profit anyway though many could argue the exposure factor.  The model may have to do it themselves even with an agency.

I wonder if there are any people more familiar with agencies that could expand on what I am writing here.

But simply put.

No pay= no profit=agency does not care

It seems like your best bet for something like FHM or Maxim would be to find a photographer shooting that style to work with. Even better if you can find someone with a proven record of being published in those or similar publications. Check with them what their requirments are.

Call the magazine and ask who the contact is for the photo department.  Also, getting the address would be nice as well.

Bingo to all, those are exactly my points.

High fashion and avant garde fashion/culture magazines also either don't pay or pay very little for editorial work. But it can help lead to high paying ads and campaigns though exposure to the right people and in building your book in the right way.

There is a rule of thumb in a photographers book, it might not apply exactly the same for models, but it makes sense, and that is you show the kind of work you want to do. If you show glamour, hottie, maxim-maximum booty, internet cheese or whatever, that's not going to sell you for traditional commercial work.

That's why I say if you have the desire & potential to do mainstream commercial or fashion work you need to be careful about what else you do and what else you show. A good agency will want to "groom" you and plan a direction and strategy for your career. Some kinds of work might be fun or cool or what you want to do, and they may even be a payday, but they might not be what's best for helping you continue or grow in getting the most, the most consistent or best paying work.

It doesn't pay in itself. I'm sure it would be great if you want to be a bikini model. I'm sure for some it will lead to more and more of the same kind of editorial work, and then various promotional gigs etc. Maybe a film director or producer would notice you? I don't know. And I don't know what the odds are. But if you have something bankable in commercial work it would be good to find out if this could damage that or not and weigh your options.

It's not porn or especially controversial for the most part, it's generally very well done high quality photography and you'll probably look great in the photos. I'm guessing it's kind of inbetween as far as whether an agent would advise it, or whether they'd mind you doing it or not.

It is possible to get some work by contacting the magazine's directly, but that is a long shot. They get requests like that all day long.

Best way is to work with a shooter who has an editorial relationship with the magazine. See if you can work on a project with the shooter on spec. If he gets paid, you get paid, that sort of thing. Definitely check for tearsheets from the shooter. Editorial work gets paid to the shooter. It's up to him if he pays his models or not.

I am in the same boat as Christina trying to get into Maxim or FHM. What I've found out so far from various photographers who have had their models get into the magazines is that you need to just send the pictures in (there is an address on both their website and in the magazine). There are also contest details in each of the magazines...
