Entry for the week of March 30-April 5th:

Cortany Elizabeth

Cortany drove 6 hours to shoot, and brought a guitar!  Fantastic girl, she did a great job and really upgraded my portfolio!

The Hair/Mua was Courtney Kalb

We've had a few 18+ links but no entries that were all 18+ so this is new. For the sake of promoting the contest I feel we should always be able to post an image with the winner. If you want to show 18+ links as part of your entry that will be fine but I'm going to say that in addition you must also show at least one image that can be posted should your model win.

Adding one more model in the mix here ... I worked with Kathryn aka Kit-Kat MM#478130 a couple of weeks ago.  Kat came well prepared with wardrobe and a concepts-to-have shoot-list we discussed over many emails.  She worked very well in studio as on location where Kat gave it all acting in a couple of my retro-concepts.  We worked our butts off for about 8 concepts that day ... below is just a sampling of the work.  Special thanks to Rachelle Dalton (MM#502212) for her usual transformation magic.

Looks like we judges are in for another tough week coming to a decision.

I'm not sure how the others decided but I’ll let you all know what I do.

First I look at all the submissions quickly here. Then I click on each and every models portfolio. When I open that portfolio I read what the model has written. To me what is written is what I like to think of my "first impression". Does what is there show an attitude that will be pleasant to work with or the opposite ... someone that could be a pain.

Then I read the models stats and then look at the images to see if those stats kind of match what I see in the portfolio. I'm not looking to see if they appear accurate it is more of "the model is 5'2" 115" and all the images are geared toward someone looking to work the fashion runway ... the stats don't match the models goals type of thing. Does that make sense.

Next I look at the images for personality. Do I see only one or two expression or I'm I looking at someone that brings more to the table. Bringing more moves the model up the list for me.

I look at the quality of the images but only a little. I understand these are new models that may have not had the chance to work with real pros. Of course even in a poor quality image I'm looking for a model with a personality that shows in the image.

Then I go back and look at the images submitted. For me the model of the week is someone that shows personality, emotion the camera can capture and a willingness to work. Add that to a model that has realistic goals and ideas of what kind of modeling they are suited for and we have winner. This may not be the model with the prettiest face, the most handsome or hottest body. It may not be the model that had the good fortune to work with a photographer that took the best image for the week. I'm looking for the model with the best potential if given the right opportunities; a model that wants to work, a model that doesn’t come off with attitude in their profile, a model who can show more than one emotion and look. I’m looking for someone that makes me say to myself … yeah I want to work with that person.

Okay you other judges, how do you decided. What is your process.

And last, I'm open to bribes ;^)

Spirit and emotion!

Is the model setting the mood for the shot.

Is the expression grabbing the viewers attention.

I believe Bill summed up pretty much the process I follow.

Looking for potential, what was accomplished for the shoot and is it in line or better than what's on the port already.  One and other to be assimilated in view of the photographers worked with already.

The ability to express is important but that is a learning curve for newbies anyhow.  Some evolve quicker due to background and other extra-curricular activities such as dance, gymnasts etc.  Others take a little longer but have potentially better genes for their modeling ambitions.

Above all, the willingness to work, suffer, fall and stand up again has to shine through.

YMMV,

Rudi A.

Well articulated. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to make this week's judging much easier. VERY, VERY good entrants so far.

I accept bribes also.

Good post Bill.

I decide very similarly although I might rely on the photographs more.   Not how well they are photographed, that comes with time and good photographers like you said, more how do they pose, do they have variety (more than one look / expression), do they have potential, good bone structure, as as you said does something of a personality show through.

Saying this, profile is still a big part, if the profile is full of negative stuff, I'm a little put off, sometimes it is not what you say but how you say it, if that makes sense.  In a close race often the wording of a profile is the eliminating factor, often saying less is more, sometimes models shoot themselves in the foot just by their profile wording.

I usually open up all the profiles in their own windows with their photos on a separate tab, then I start to eliminate the obvious closing those windows and minimizing the "possibles".  After I decided on maybe two "top candidates" I will maximize the the third tier "possibles" to make sure I haven't missed something and if I still feel the same way, that they are not candidates, I close the "possibles" windows.

Lately I've found there has been many close candidates and sometimes when all else fails I might simply pick the model that is over 5'8" over say a short model all else being equal.  It might not be fair in the real world, but in the end something has to be the final deciding factor and modeling isn't the real world anyway.

This is how I decide on who is Newbie of the Week.  I open each models portfolio.  I look at what has she done before this shoot?  Did she improve upon that with the contest shoot?  Is she expressive or the same look over and over again?  Does she look comfortable in front of the camera or does her discomfort show through?  I'm looking for confidence and flexibility in expressions and poses.  An improvement over her past shoots (or his).  I try not to notice who shot it, how artistic the photographer is or how great it's lit.  I really focus on the model.  I also look for a bit of variety.  My understanding is we're supposed to be doing a freebie to improve the models portfolio.  So, that's a factor for me as well.  Is this a shot that's portfolio worthy because the model did such a great job and were there changes, variety?  Then, if all things are still equal and no one is leaping out and off the pages - I go to who I think shows the most potential.  I read their portfolio's but really don't give it any weight other than - how much experience does she/he have?  If they've been doing it awhile and had a few shoots under their belt - I put then in a higher expectation category.  I DO NOT judge them on what they say in their portfolio.  I feel the contest is about how well they modeled - now how eloquent a speaker/writer they may or may not be.  Sometimes I've been put off by portfolio read and then met the model and found them to be nothing like I expected from their bio.  Some just don't write good bio's or they are trying too hard to sound like they're tough and can handle themselves out of fear of not being taken seriously, etc...  So, I just don't factor that in at all.  I appreciate all these posts.  I think it's interesting to hear how each of us is thinking and judging.  Shows how diverse a community this is which makes for more interesting judging.  And thank you Craig for coming up with such a brilliant format to present a brilliant idea smile

No problem!!  Craig needs more sleep than he gets.  He's the busiest guy I know!

Very interesting reading the different thought processes involved with how you guys are deciding who to vote for.

My process is very similar to Lucinda's, insomuch as I look at their contest submission pictures and compare them to their previous work in their port.  We are supposed to be "List" photographers, which implies we have a pretty good idea what to do with a camera, so it's logical to think that a Newbie deserving of winning the contest has enough natural talent to produce when paired with that List photographer.

My other main criteria is actually quite shallow.  I simply look for who I'd want to shoot.

Congratulations to Kit-Kat and Amadeus.  I thought you two produced some really awesome images.  And I hope to see so many and more contestants in the future.  It's fun when it's so tough to decide smile
