This is just the sort of thing that would make a Holga happy! And Steven, thanks for the tip on reflective paint.

Dave... I have done the same thing in the past, but the problem is the light is too small for a great enough effect, as well it is dim.  (also warning, the glass tube is HOT near the plug!!!)

I recently found the 18" tubes at 'Depot that I will be trying... but the BALLAST that you can find (as pictured) ... do NOT WORK!!!

You need a 40 wt + balast.

Sounds like some interesting variations might also exist. With such a minimal output, you could use colored lights that would add a cast to the subject, but not the background should you have a wide enough image.

Humm.... let's get out those strands of single color reds, blues, greens... nahh, leave the greens at home.

Guilty of using a 99cent turkey pan as a reflector. I actually used it a couple weeks ago, then again last week.

Eventually I would like to be able to do a fashion/glamour shoot with only common kitchen items. And a Dremel tool.

Oh I made a snoot out of... out of... actually I don't know what the hell that thing was supposed to be, but it jumped in front of me at a hardware store, and it was 3 bucks...

I've done so much dumb shit I can't even remember. Sometimes I remember when I see the pictures ("oh yeah, I took apart some white Ikea furniture to use as a white bounce for that one..."). Mmmm, melamine.

Wow! I thought I was innovative, but you musta had survival training or something.

My first softbox was made out of plywood and had ten 4-foot flouescent bulbs in it.  Covered it with 30M Rosco gels and did product photography for a couple years with it.    I had it suspended over a table and I remember it almost fell once which would have crushed the products I was shooting for a catalog.  Bad news when you're shooting rare engineering protptypes.  haha!

Ah, dem were da days...

I've seen a desk lamp that's sort of the same.  Except there's a magnifying glass in the middle where the whole is.

Yep.  This is a lot like that, only it's actually pretty light (as in not weighing much).

Yeah, it's disapointingly dim, but it's pretty light (as in not weighing much).   Also, it's big enough to easily shoot through it with my RB67 which has a filter size of 77 mm.  Good luck with the bigger tube.  Flourescent bulbs get brighter all the time.

No... you go to an auto parts store and buy "chrome bumper paint".... that is as bright as you can get.

Even better go to an auto parts store and buy a “cut and replace mirrorâ€? you can get a none glass sheet for about $5.

I bought one of those hideous round fluorescent ceiling lights at the hardware store for $40.  This is one of the images I got.  Seriously, it turned this girl's mood from hugely self critical and pissy to delighted, in about 25 shots.

How do you time your shutter to to go off only when the lights blink? wink

I am working on a LED ringlight. the idea is that i could have a continuous powerful ring light that does not melt my lens ! smile

I am planning to use LED ropelight that can be color controled via computer.

I am talking to several set lighting designers and sourcing out the components... any additional info on that beyonce LED ringlight (brand/company that rents it...?) would be helpfull.

For hi-output LEDs go to www.superbrightleds.com

The tank experiment pics in my port were shot with hi-output LEDs.  There is a chroma key system that uses blue or green LEDs in a ringlight with a retroreflective curtain.  Full Compass stocks it.
