I'm putting together a workshop here in LA for a commercial photographer to come out and teach at.

If I had said nude/glamour , folks would be flocking...

The responses are pretty scarse, is it because people are generally not interested in commercial or what?

Thanks!

commercial photographers are working and do not need a workshop and those that are glamor based are hobbiest usually and don't want a commercial workshop, and horny guys want to see half or full naked chicks and commercial implies too much clothes for them so they don't want to go to a commercial workshop.

I have done commercial workshops and they filled but they were advertised by major corporations and only advertised to higher end working studios and limits in size and high in price to weed out annoyances.  At $1500 a weekend, and based mainly on the business end of it rather than the shooting, it was packed with 25 people all working studio owners.  They are the target, not the low end new photographers.

That is SUCH a good point

We tried to set it up so it has a lighting seminar AND information on the business end.

The photographer was gracious enough to make himself available for people like me, but maybe i'm one of the few sad

Lua, I would if I could get that together big_smile

I'd suspect most workshops are for the hobbyists.

Hobbyists tend to want to see more boobies than anything else.

Wonder what the response would be like to a "How-To" porn workshop?

Probably would have to hold it in a stadium. LOL

Since I am extremely interested in shooting girls with large plastic objects sticking in and out of their various orifices, I would pay a large sum of money to attend a porn how to party... I mean workshop.

I'll book you on my next one.  Of course we use actors to simulate the models so I hope you're not bothered that we have an all male reenactment for the demonstration.  And of course you can feel free to take active participation, in fact it is encouraged as a way to really get to know the poses inside and out  big_smile

How much is this sum of money?  I think I can set something up for you.  Even a one on one...er, one on two?  It'll cost 50% more.

Idiots are in it for the tits and ass, be happy you don't have them interested.
Wait around and market the workshop some more and the serious people will crawl out of the woodwork for a commercial workshop.
It is highly competitive but very lucrative work.

Best of Luck

You are as bad as I am... sounds like you would shoot, literally, anything that walks, crawls, flys or slithers... and a few things that just lay there and don't do much of anything at all, as long as there's a buck or two in it.

I meant the model to photographer ratio.  I'd be the intructor so  I would not be included.

the difference is that the group of people that goes to your workshop are really interested in working in the commercial field, while the ones that go for nude/glamour workshops many of them do it only because there will be "boobz" so if you take out the "WANNAS BOOBZ GWC LOLZ" from the glamour workshop then you may have the same number of people really interested in the techincal learning of both fields.

you have some good comments so far... and i think you have a good idea for a workshop. i also think that if you are soliciting on this web site for your commercial workshop - you are just aiming at the wrong demographic of photographers.  yes - some of us are mainly marketing/commercial photographers (with an interest in modeling photography), but i think the larger percentage of photographers here on MM are looking at the 'model' aspect of their style of photography.

I think it depends on who's going to teach it.  If it's Joe Blow, the so-called famous commercial photographer, who no one has heard about, I wouldn't pay to go, and I don't think anyone else would either.

If it was someone like Robert Farber, Patrick Demarchelier, or Pete Turner, I'd be there in a flash.  Also, you might be charging too much for your workshop.

Really? $230 is too much for a 2 lighting sessions (with models) an intro to commercial photography AND portfolio review?

The photographer I selected is well respected in commercial.

I personally wouldn't sign up for a commercial workshop because I'm not interested in it.  MM isn't really geared toward photographers attempting to make a living with commercial photography, y'know?  There are some here and all, but they aren't the majority, which is probably why you aren't getting a huge turn-out.

Have you tried advertising elsewhere?  Can you put up flyers on campuses that have photo programs, things like that?  Take out ads in the free papers?
