Is that the episode where her bumbling ass knocked down the lights?

Probably.  I just remember the one chick with the really bright hair was on the bed and Hef comes in and she's all "come hug me!" even though she's naked with her ass in the air and he looks like he's about to fall asleep.  lol

It was awesome.

Shooting for Playboy,"the magazine" and shooting for Playboy magazines are 2 different things. If I'm right, just a few years ago,the center spread and cover (with the 36 flashes and all)were still shot with an 8 X 10 camera. It's maybe  gone now???When I wrote:"it seems they don't allow Photoshop" that was not from looking at their stuff but from reading and article about a shoot and again, that was for Playboy,"the magazine" not Girls of Playboy or alike.

So, I guess bust your ass and get famous!! lol!

Well I dont honestly think Hef has a whole lot to do with the magazine anymore.  His daughter runs the empire.

I talked with them about 8 years ago wanting to work for them.  I had a very impressive book at the time and it came down to my age.  They were not interested in having a 20 something running around the compound.   You have better luck winning the lottery than getting a photography job with that magazine.  Might as well just start your own playboy style magazine.  not that expensive.  would only cost you about 250k per month to do.  smile (and that might not include paying celebs to be in the book)

Can anyone tell the process?

Sure. Become a superbly skilled photographer, great at working with all types of models, develop a portfolio and credits that reflect that level of expertise. Then apply.

Kidnap Steven Wayda, and get plastic surgery and go to work as him. The only problem is that your work better be damn good or someone will catch on!

I can relate the process for getting into the "music business" which is probably about the same.  First, you have to have the product.  In this case, you have to be an awesome photographer, have incredible models who are willing to shoot your concepts with you, and you have to be extremly proficient with Photoshop to make your images as flawless as Playboys.

And THEN...  you have to know somebody.   And the ONLY way to get to know somebody is to network the crap out of eveybody and everything you do.  Hang out with models & photographers, go to industry functions, do free work for people who can "help" you, sell yourself (without seeming like you're selling yourself or that you're deperate) etc.  And when you think you absolutely cannot take it one more day, do it all over again.  (this is called paying your dues)  And if you keep doing that consistanly, AND you have the product (see above) you might just someday find yourself in a position to submit a series to the editors.

Best success,

You don't.

Unfortunately, it's one of those annoying instances in life when if you don't know the answer already yourself, then the having someone else give it to you probably won't do you a bit of good...

If I don't get in that way, then I'll just look for the girls on MM that want you to shoot them for free so they can submit to Playboy. If they get in, I'm sure they'll use the photographer that shot them in the first place.. I'm SURE of it!

now that's funny

You pretty much cant (I know that's a pretty finite term, but its as small a playing field as you could get) get on the on-staff.

As for a guest photographer? It can happen. It does happen. send in your stuff to the editor..just like any other publication. Remember that American playboy is highly coveted for models and photographers to grace their work and/or bodies..so you are a needle in a haystack of thousands of weekly submissions.

But guest photography, absolutely can happen, for both main and SE's, as well as online.

Dont let people tell you you cant do something because it's too hard..just try it.

You wont know until you try.

It is easier if you are referred directly by someone who is familiar with them..but not everyone is comfortable soliciting photographers for hire. If you find someone who is..ask them if can refer you.

For one of their shoots you have a set-up not unlike working on a motion picture set... and with just about as many people toiling away behind the scenes, too, as you would find in motion picture production. A shoot like that is designed to death.

In many respects that is why so many of their shots, if analysed from the technical and lighting standpoint, appear to be very much the same shot x shot over, and over, and over again, just with different models and different furniture.

It's not what you know that matters, it's who you know.  The door is extremely narrow, but a lot of people want to squeeze in.

But if you really want to give it a try without knowing anybody in there, have about 6 breathtaking 8x10 prints/shots and submit them by mail (make sure the models are ok with you sending their pictures in).  Your shots should be in "Playboy style" and not some funky-looking/artsy pictures which you think are breathtaking.  The address is in every issue.  Mississippi River is the demarcation.  West side photogs submit to Los Angeles.   East side photogs submit to Chicago.  The rest is up to them.  Best of luck.

It has nothing to do with who you know.  They are looking for talent and not friends of friends.  I had a girl that submitted my photos and they contacted me to do a work for hire for them.  I didn't know anyone there.  That's why I say submit to them and they will contact you if they like what they see.

Also, the Mississippi thing is false.  I live west of the Mississippi and I was initially contacted by Chicago and have dealt mostly with them and a few times with LA, depending on where the photos will be used.

You might be thinking of "American Photo." They did a cover story of the Anatomy of a Centerfold (picture) awhile back.

They can say what they want with regards to their "no retouching" policy and the general public will probably believe it, but don't try to fool other photographers who know what to look for.

That policy is for THEM to evaluate the potential model. Its not meant for the general public viewing.

This is why I love the old Penthouse so much!  They took chances - obviously within the parameters of a porn magazine - but with definitely more creativity than Playboy!
