Ok, so like what's the difference and which one is right??  Does that little dash in the middle really matter?

This is how I always saw it.

Makeup is the product.
I'm going to buy some makeup (noun).

Make-up(verb) is the service.

This is just an opinion though.

My business cards say MakeUp. I guess it is up to the individual. You're an artist Make something Up. hehe

My business card says makeup and I usually type makeup. Sometimes I put in the hyphen if I'm feeling dangerous. Rarr.

"Make-up" is not a verb? wink

*makeup was found in the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary at the entries listed below.

make-up (FOR FACE)
make-up (PARTS)

*make-up (FOR FACE)   Show phonetics
noun [u]
coloured substances used on your face to improve or change your appearance:
I put on a little eye make-up.
She wears a lot of make-up.

(from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

*make-up (PARTS)   Show phonetics
noun [u]
The make-up of something or someone is the combination of things that form it:
They argue that the membership of the Council does not reflect the racial make-up of the city.
Organizational ability is not one of the most obvious parts of his make-up.

(from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)

So, basically, they list it as MAKE-UP, not MAKEUP...

oh ok.  But I guess it does depend on the person.  I find that the hyphen takes up too much space so I always write it as makeup.
