Can anyone please give me an idea for clothing for a 50's pin-up shoot I'm doing?  My hair is short and styling it could be an issue too.  Thanks so much!!!

If you have anything in a full circle skirt, that would be cute, paired with a cap sleeve sweater.  Or you could go the "wiggle dress" route.

This is a good reference site :

Take a good look at the expressions, because that can really make or break a pinup shot.
Have fun!

Hire a stylis, and a make-up artist and a hair stylist this will help capture the look you want. but if you want a little more info......
in the 50's everything matched from hair assesories to shoes and every thing in between, Women often had a a string of pearls on and looked as if they stepped out of a magizine. they look perfect, their hair was perfectly done , hours at the beauty salon.
clothing ideas: sweater sets in matching pastel colors, full skirts, or pencile skirt, pleated slackes , and cute little hats gloves were a great matching asserorie.
Google 50's clothing and a whole lot of images will pop up, checko ut 50's hair too lots of varieties, depending on how short your hair is you might want to get a wig that can be styled into a 50's doo
Hope that helps..Mandy of Deadly Design Make-up Arytistry.

Send an email to Kel and ask her, she sells vintage clothing and is very close to your size.

I agree.  Hire the right people and save yourself a headache about getting something you want.  I just did a pinup retro look last night.  It was totally great and something that I wouldn't have run out and did.  But with our team and a great new model, it was fabulous!  I would do it again as long as I'm not stuck in that market.

Pin up , to me, is very different then just a normal 50's retro look. I have done 50 style shots recently, but in no way would I describe it as pin up.

You must elaborate! What SORT of pinup do you want? Pinups of old seemed to be divided into three rough sub-genres:

Girl fully dressed with ridiculous contrivance causing her skirt to be lifted, showing her legs and stockings. Two Elvgren examples would be a teacher standing on her desk holding up the skirt because there is a mouse and a secretary changing a water cooler jug and hiking her skirt up in the process. That's one of the more plausible ones

Girl in lingerie. This could be a negligee as well

Girl in swimsuit, self explanatory

Do a google image search for "vargas" or "elvgren". This will give you a visual reference.  You'll notice that about half of the pin-ups have short or medium length hair, so the length of your hair is less an issue than learning to syle it correctly. Setting your hair is Pincurls or small sponge rollers or a combination of both with regular hair gel while it's damp is a period correct method of styling. Pincurls will give you tighter curls and the rollers will give more of a wave effect. After the hair is dried and the curlers come out, the hair then needs to be combed into the correct configuration. Again use your pin-up pictures as a reference.

As for wardrobe, you need to start with the right underpinnings. To wit:
1.Pointy brassiere
2.Full fashioned stockings. These are the seamed kind that need outside assistance to stay up. If you go the lingerie route you can use fishnets but you will want STOCKINGS. Not tights.
3. outside assistance to keep the stockings up. this could be a garter belt, or an open bottom girdle.

The following sites carry this sort of stuff.

http://www.vickisnylons.com/
Good stuff including all of the above new and made from old patterns. The biggest caveat is that the podgy 60 year old proprietess finds it neccesary to post photos of herself modeling her wares.

Bulletbras.net carries pointy bras but they're rather utilitarian looking, best for putting UNDER the sweater.

http://www.cameo-intimates.com/lingerie/
This site carries the more exotic stuff and it toes the line between vintage and modern. Fancier than the previous two though. Some stuff is tacky tacky tacky but some of it would look CUUUUTE for a pinup. The downside is that they put their heart logo on everything, but maybe that's a personal pet peeve.

if you go with the swimsuit thing you'll need a vintage or vintage style swimsuit. These are easy to find but not so easy to find in good shape since the elastic is liable to be shot. under no circumstances should you wear it for long periods of time in a pool or ocean.

Depending upon your shoe size, good shoes should not be too hard to find. Your best bet would be to find a tall heel, not too thin with a rounded toe. Don't go for flash and don't go the modern stripper route. That being said, Go to the pumps section of Fredricks of hollywood's shoe page. The open toe pump, the mary jane and the babydoll pump are all perfect. And not too spendy all things considered.

Someone already mentioned the vintage clothing angle and Ebay is lousy with the stuff. Under no circumstances should you use a POODLE SKIRT. ditto for saddle shoes. It's fakey, trite, cliche and juvenile. Besides, you want to look like an adult here.

Hope that helps

*Edit* Duh, I totally forgot about the fluffy toe slippers. Fred's has those too, and in five colours no less!!

If you´re not too talented with getting hair curly you better take a stylist this time (on my first shoot I had a lady do my hair and make up that did make up for historic movies and was a teacher at a prestigious make up-school and it paid off. Plus I learned some basics)

If you are talented in doing your hair here are some links that can help you out:

Some books, painters, vintage photographers I can really, really recommend for inspiration, poses and expressions:

Gil Elvgren
The great American Pin up
History of Mens magazine Volume 1-2
1000 Pin up Girls
Vargas
Bernard of Hollywood

Wigs extensions for the correct hair, then again you can do a lot with short hair too, especially for the 50's smile

Please will someone please recreate This pinup as a photo. Call it the effect of celery on ladies underpants.

A number of photographers have mimiced Art Frahm's celery/bloomer style, some more successfully than others.

No celery sad
dklo's whoops
composited with Frahm's art

There's a few others, but I don't have the links at hand, alas.

Let me rephrase, will someone DO A GOOD JOB of recreating one of those?
