Select the publications you would like to submit to, request their Photographer's Guidelines, and follow them. 

Professional presentation is a MUST.  Be wary.  Art Directors and Photo Editors of magazines are completely jaded.  They see hundreds, if not thousands of images every single day.

Always remember your images will be sitting on a light table next to hundreds of other Photographer's images.  Make sure they're good before you send, or you will burn your bridge.

Yeah, what he said. Getting your foot in the door with editors is tough. It took me almost 2 years of submitting photos before I started getting editorial work. Now, if i get an assignment it's all editorial. I don't send in on spec anymore.

If you get in with writers it helps as well. They can have their stories submitted with your photos.
