I have been modelling as Vanitie Caise for two and a half years now. I always have that name used along with my images and never my real name. I'm starting to wondering if this is a good idea or whether it might be putting people off.
Does anyone else on here use an alias all the time? Do you think it is hurting or hindering you?
Many photographers I have worked with have only found out my real name when I sign a release.

I think a lot of models work under aliases, especially those who do more risque work. (It's a little bit of Google protection, if nothing else.)

I do not think it helps or hinders. It is only an alias. I like having an alias because I like to keep my personal life personal. I have not heard any complaints about using an alias and I use a different alias when I am dancing. It is really only a matter of personal preference. Some people believe it is my real name.

I recommend that all female models use a 'stage name' when modeling.

There are too many stalkers and weird people out there to have your real name easily accessible.

I was just getting ready to start a post about this...

So it's ok to use one? I mean, I know it's "ok" but photographers really don't have problems with it?

Oooo and what a good way to come up with one?

Ok. Thanks everyone. Do you think a more realistic name might be a good idea? I first started using an alias so that if my dad looked me up he wouldnt find me but now he knows what I do anyway

I'm quite happy to have a modelling name.  That way nothing comes up (google etc.) when someone hears you do modelling.

I expect a model to use a stage name.

I think that a realistic name is more professional.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Alias's are fine but when it comes to signing a model release, especially a 2257 compliant one, you'll be expected to sign the name that matches your two ID's.

I also know many models who are working under a "stage name" - I have no problem with it, and have encouraged it for some who are just starting out. It is a bit of protection, but as noted above, the "legal name" has to go on the release (and I verify that by seeing the ID) - so that the contract is valid.

As for the question of "what kind of name" - I'm in agreement that a "real" sounding name is nice... Most of the models I've shot aren't in a hurry to be attached to something that sounds too much like a stripper or porn star name. My sympathies to all of the real women in the world whose parents thought it was a good idea to name you Destiny, Candi, Misti or Dream.  smile

I personally can't stand this so called "stage names", but I do understand the purpose of them for those who wish to have no issues down the road with so called "stalkers".

However you should reconsider at some point, as I personally don't believe its professional.

When ever I do photo shoots I have release forms all the models have to agree to and sign before any shoot is conducted.

I've actually had a few refuse to sign the release form with their real name. I require a valid ID card to verify the name they are using for release forms is legitimate.

I'm on the fence about "stage names", I personal don't like them, but I do understand the purpose.

However I don't like communicating with models especially when I interview, or conduct any business discussion, while referring to them by there Alias name. Its just unprofessional in my book.

I personally do not disclose names or other contact information of the models, but I do require to be supplied their correct contact information and real name and last name for legal reasons.

I put in the release form that I will not disclose their information unless I have written permission by the model.

Apparently, it's professional enough that stage names (or pen names, in the case of us writers) have endured for this long.  As long as the release is signed with their legal name, then why does it matter what name they prefer to use for their profession?  Maybe some people prefer their stage name over their real name.

Thats why I call myself Victoria. Its not my real name.
Besides, what if Jennie decides at 18 she wants to model and then at 30 wants to be a 6th grade school teacher? Theyre not going to hire Jennie if she did nudes, but its not an issue if Casey, a woman who looks a lot like Jennie at 18, did. Obviously, Casie is the stage name so when Jennie gets googled, her nudes dont come up.

DVS is not my real name...honest!

Pseudonyms are fine and for the most part expected, in this industry.  Sometimes they are for dramatic effect...sometimes for a sense of anonymity.  I've never heard of any case where one damaged potential for work...unless you had the words "vagina" or "penis" in it, then it may a little.

I don't think it really matters...When it comes to a name the only thing that matters is on the Waiver/ Model Release it has BOTH the Legal and Stage name.  ID also needs to be identical to the Legal Name...After that...the only thing I am concerned about is what to call you...
I use Hardwood Pin Ups as my business name...so I guess that's like an alias...

Anyways...Do what you want and don't worry about the rest...Call is a good pre-screening out of people...work with those who want to work with you...using either name!

All the best to you...

Cheers

I personally think it implies a level of dishonesty,  that I will not tolerate.. I think that the same goes to photographers..    What are you trying to hide!!!!   My Business name, my name,  my address, phone numbers ,  emails etc...  are all out there in the open..    If you use a ploy,  then can we trust anything about you..

To model Nude or Fetish  and Pin Up its sensible and normal to have a stage name. Hiding your own, or refusing to use it in agreements or on a legal document doesn't usually come into it

Another point.  I gave my opinion elsewhere..  Point  Stage name is ok by me.. Here is how it works if you do work with me..   First you fill out an information sheet with two  photo ID's,  before we take even the first test photo...  We do not disclose any information.  If the client wishes to employ the model for other jobs that we do not do,  then  I give the model the contact information,  and she does or does not contact the client..it is in her hands..

I even more understand it for models.  I bet few have a problem with legalities over signing things for photographers they work with.  That may be a relatively small group.  It's the fact that anyone in the country can drop in and view their info that bothers them.  How much more do you need than a name, age, city, and state if you really want to find someone.  It's s.c.a.r.y!

I keep my private info hidden.  Its private for a reason.
