and the really cool thing is that some of those winning photos are shot on canon point and shoots.  I was talking to a friend at Conde Nast and he mentioned it to me and the images he pointed out blew me away

This is from several collections all National Geo but not from the best photos of the year.  Just look at the dates on the photos you will see it just jumps all over the place. 

I also wanted to point out that one of this years Pulitzer winners (Alex Majoli) in photography shoots only with Olympus Point and Shoots.  He is also with legendary Magnum Photos.
