It's one of the few pictures in my profile without a comment. I think it's really cute though, and I want it to stay! LOL. What do you think? Should I keep it or get rid of it?

Keep it! I don't have comments on all of the pics in my MM portfolio either, but that doesn't mean that nobody likes them. I love that pic, and left a comment, lol. Good luck!

Keep the images you like, after all you are trying to represent yourself not win a popularity contest?? I personally like the selection and mix of images.

The blurry leaves in the foreground are a bit of a distraction even though the girl is holding a leaf in her hand.

Also, the way the leaves obsure her head is a bit distracting.

It has the look of a photo taken by a parent of their child.

There is a lot of emotion in the child's face that we can all relate to.

To keep it in your port, you'll have to decide that either it is an image you are proud of, or it is one that will generate work for you.

Did you want them to be out of focus? Just curious...

Were you influenced by another photographer or photo, or is this an avant-garde style you are pioneering? Just curious.

No.
Why are you getting defensive and refusing to discuss a photo you posted in a critique forum?
Did you think about any of the questions I have asked?

1/3 of your image is an out of focus object in the foreground. I'd like to know what went into your decision to do that.

It's hard to read tone through text and I thought you were trying to be a smartass.

I like the way the picture looks and that is why it looks the way it does, and why it is in my portfolio. I didn't want to discuss the photo. I just wanted to know what people thought about it, and if people thought I should keep it or not.

I think if you can't justify breaking the rules of photography, you shouldn't break them.

Perhaps that is the reason for the lack of comments.

I'm being 100% serious, and trying to be helpful by making you think about your work.

When I do post a request for critique, I hope people do the same for me.

First rule: You have to know the rules before you break them.

I guess this is where all the silly "take the lens cap off" posts start.

I'm just wondering, since someone has now "commented" on the picture.... how the hell we suppose to know which one it is?

lol. I do have a link sitting in the middle of my first thread.

And I already understand "the rules" of photography. I just prefer to follow my own.

You have a URL. This is a link

More importantly, it seems you're not ready to look at your work objectively.

Thank you for the link.

And yes, I am ready to look at my work objectively. However, I know what I like, want, don't like, and don't want. I like that picture. I like the blurry leaves in the foreground. And I'm not going to stop liking that just because it's not the norm.

I think it's cute. The little girl has a nifty little smile going on too. So, let the image have it's run for awhile until you need room for new material.

How about....... " I know it when I see it."  Is that a rule somewhere?

Thank you for the comments, Joe.

To everyone else, I don't mean to sound rude. The truth of the matter is I do know what I want and don't want my pictures to be. I am open to advice, but I am not open to normalizing my style.

Tony... I wasn't being deragatory.  My point is just because I don't like it... someone else obviously does.  So for the photographer, it's a " I know it when I see it"  style.

This is all I was asking. I like the picture, I want to keep it, but if no one else liked it it would be better if I replaced it.

It really shouldn't matter if everyone else likes it or not.  What do you like?  Is it one of your best?

So ................ um..................  go with the flow?  Show only what's commercially appealing or what you like?  Both?

The number of views and comments is usually a good way to gauge this.

What is the purpose of your portfolio, to get commercial work or to display images you like?

Based on comments and views, that photo wouldn't be very commercial, so leaving it in your port possibly means your portfolio is a personal statement rather than a professional tool. It's really up to you.

Who is the audience for your work, Tony Sharp or everyone else?

"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up."

Either that or

"I have discovered photography; now I can kill myself"

or even

"Art does not evolve by itself, the ideas of people change and with them their mode of expression."

Tony, there's little room for both of these statements to be true.  Keeping a photo because others like it is the difinition of normalizing your style.

I respect XA's points, because you should know WHY you like your photos, and you should be able to justify your artistic decisions, regardless of whether they break "the rules".  Knowing why a photo is in your portfolio is more important than knowing if others like it.

For my money, I'd get rid of the photo, simply because it does not match the aesthetics of your other photos.  I like it, and she has a cute expression--and if anything, I'd wish the leaves were MORE out of focus--but it looks out of place.

It's model mayhem, I don't think it matters.  Unless you are sending potential clients here to look at your portfolio (and thats probably not a good idea) nobody that matters much to your business is going to see it.

It's poorly composed and an obvious non-model.  Unless you plan on using MM as you would a port on any other picture hosting site, I'd get rid of it.  Ditto for the one that you discarded the color except for the outfit.  Trite.
