Some models and photographers prefer to work with music in the background to help relax and establish a rythm to the shoot.

Models, what music do you prefer? I often ask models to bring what the like but I should also need to purchase a few more DVDs.

Thanks,

Mike

Depends on the type and style of shoot. I like most styles of music, so the music is good for me when it matches the style of the shoot. But I often go to shoots without music. Sometimes that's good too.

Im a big fan of upbeat, fast music such as dance and techno. I know that sounds clichéd, but it really does alot for a fun, funky fashion shoot.

Personally I go without it because they like to turn up the volume and they can barely hear me, but I always keep a portable CD player in the trunk just in case they ask for it.

I have a "shooting" playlist on my iTunes with 9+ hours of all kinds of upbeat, usually mainstream rock, ska, punk, jazz, and hip-hop/rap.  Everything from Aretha Franklin and the Ataris to Vanilla Ice and The Velvet Underground.

But sometimes you have to tailor the music to the mood of the look you're going for.  Or just play what the model brings.

Oh, and I agree that the music has to be kept at an appropriate volume so directions can be heard, but silence is often awkward.

I will occasionally play music that matches the tone of the shoot (The Cruxshadows for a goth shoot, for instance smile ) I also have a long playlist of photography-related songs on iTunes, just for fun. However, I don't usually play music unless the models ask for it. It says on my website:

"If you want music to be played during the shoot you are welcome to bring some, or I have a large selection. (Rap may be art, but it is not music.)"

When I bring my own music, classic rock mostly.  I've also brought Norah Jones, Harry Connick Jr., and classical.  Music keep me moving.  That can be good, except when the photographer says, "Hold that."  It's not a big deal to me what's playing in the background as long as it's there.

Music keeps me going.  I always have somesort of music playing.  I do not have an ipod or a portable CD player but I will always have a wide variety of CDs with me.  If I know what type of shoot it will be I will end up making a CD with songs that will help with the mood of the shoot.

Out of my 300+ CD collection, most models surprisingly pick either Enigma or Lenny Kravitz.

Once a model picked Type-O-Negative thinking it was Country Western.

Sure blew her mind.. hehehe wink

I love to shoot to music... but what I listen to depends on the type of shoot I'm doing. I love rock and alternative, 80's rock, and sometimes need to hear some of that top 40 crap... just because!

Old fart here! I once had a model give me a 'bad reference' because I "made her listen to boring music" during the shoot. The music I play is for me, to help keep me focused and to help my concentration, not for the model, or to help her with "movements". I'll direct the 'movements' into the pose I want, then ask her to hold that pose. I don't want  contiuous or free form movement, not under any circumstances! The music I use will be along the lines of a classical chamber group, a string quartet or something like the Dave Brubeck Quartet, classical guitar or maybe something along the lines of Enya or Leonard Cohen or the Modern Jazz Quartet. If you don't know who they are, you probably should!

For what it's worth, I can't shoot to rock or any other 'frantic' sounding music. It puts my 'teeth on edge' and far worse, distracts me from what I'm doing.

I've done several shoots with boyfriend/fiancee/escorts present who are wantabe musicians. It hasn't been unusual to find them sitting by the stereo, writing down the album names, dsaying they had never heard guitar work like that. To me, that's very sad!

If you need loud, raucus rock music, don't shoot with me!

I need my music whilst shooting. It helps me get into a familiar space quicker. In my cd case there is:- carina round, combichrist, goteki, lost prophets, sugababes, ramstein, pendulum, andy c, linkin park, system of a down, angelique kidjo, High Contrast and Total

Bad music can be detrimental (!) and should warrant bad feedback. lol

It depends on the situation. If I'm in the studio I tend to have something playing. Not loud, but for atmosphere. Generally I just put my music collection on random play from my laptop and let it go. There's over 100 hours of music on there ranging from Goth/industrial/EBM and Electronic/techno/trance to Classic rock and classical. (there's 18 hours of pink floyd on there)

Generally I try to match the music to the person I'm shooting. Since almost all of my models are people I've known from the club scene, it's fairly easy to know what they like to hear.

If I'm out on location I go without.

I have several playlists on my iPod that reflect different styles of music.

The favorite playlist so far is "dirty photoshoot".

If you use iTunes, you can sample my playlist here.

I personally prefer Metal [mainly gothic or black metal].
It depends on the shoot tho.

Bands like Tristania, CoF, Enslavement of Beauty or Dimmu Borgir are more than welcome.

..anyway, looks like 3/4 of the photographers I work with are in love with Rammstein, but I don't dare to tell them I don't like that kind of music at all ^^°

Delilah

I think the music should match the style of the pics. I love listening to anything from rap to country to hard rock to classical. It all depends... but the music is a must! But don't allow it to be a distraction from the job either...

How could I miss this one!  It's my opinion that music is very important to set the mood of a photo shoot.  It should be selections that both the photographer and the model like.  I like a variety so it's not hard for me to find something to agree on.  The volume should not be so loud that communication is impaired ... unless everyone can read lips! lol

Well I have over 5 gigs of tunes on my Mac that ranges from 50's rockabilly to Punk, hardcore and psychobilly  and every thing inbetween  If I dont have it the the model brings the type of music they like   and away we go  shooting like mad people !!!!!1

I like random with many cd of various genres.

One of my favorite modeling sessions had Italian Opera.   Everyone stating speaking like Opera boy and it last for about 30 minutes.  Everyone on the crew was singing and talking as if in an Opera.
Fun time.

A great opera movie is Faranelli,  in the story one of the characters has his balls cut off.   I could feel his pain.
