Whats the difference between a 'tasteful' open leg shot and a 'vulgar' one ?

It seems that more female models are open to doing those now than say, 10 - 20 years ago. As I conversate with them about their previous projects, even those who are only open to doing plain nudes, give in to photographers who want to do open leg shots even if the model will not allow them to be published. Isn't there a way to find a medium here ? I understand why both parties might think that spread shots are tacky, but is there a way to create one that most viewers be ok with, i.e. view it as artform as opposed to porn ?

"Pink" would be one threshold. I'd expect that overt sexual context would be another.

I think when it comes to nudity, and especially nudity that shows genitalia, there is always going to be one person (or many) who find it distasteful and pornographic.

So no. I don't think there is a way to create a universally accepted open leg shot. There's always someone to take offense.

is "conversate" even a word? Do you use that with your legs open or closed?

Seriously, a photo done by Suze Randall can look classy as hell. Conversely, a fully clothed spreadlegged photo by a GWC can look slutty.

I think it is a phyric distinction.  Open leg is open leg.  Everything else is subjective.

Definition of conversate :.
(kən-vûr'sāt)

1. (v.) To make conversation. An uncommon phrase used to suggest the start of a conversation while making others believe one is smarter than they truely are.

Example: Excuse us while we escape to the vestibule and conversate for a short time.

tasteful and vulgar are totally and completely subjective to the viewer.  that would be like me asking you what soda is the best.  whichever one you like.

pointless thread is pointless.

+1  I have a few open leg images in my port that most people that have commented on them think are tasteful, beautiful and even artistic.  However, I have had a few comments about them being disgusting, gross & pornographic.   I had a "Photographer"om Alaska leave a comment on the image of Jody Kovac squatting in front of a boulder in Joshua Tree that is open leg stating the the image is disgusting and degrades women & my portfolio!

If you get the cowbell just right, spread legs are fine.

that is something i will never understand, why the f... r u allowing to do pictures from u, which ones u never will allow to be published. n why the f... should i as a photographer take a pic that i'm never gonna show to anyone. earlier it would be waist of time n material, now in digital way it's still waist of time.

It might be a word in your reference, but it's like "ain't".  Makes you sound uneducated.  The word you want is "converse"  Or "conversing".

But whatever.

Is there some artistic direction that you're looking to achieve where open legs would be necessary?

Here's a suggestion.  Have your model wear pants or even underwear and take your shot.  Converse with your model and show her how artistic it looks and suggest she try it without the pants.  And then respect her right to say no.

I have seen VERY few open leg nudes that don't seem vulgar.  But again... I have only one opinion.  Everyone else has their own.

I thought so too, but the project director was there. He said "Listen, I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell".

Who was I to argue???

I can do it... I have on occasion... They are never overt but natural and thoughtful... It's possible. The few who might take offense must be members of the Taliban or some other doctrinaire religion....

If you want a model to spread her legs just ask and shoot, what sounds and looks good in life dosen't alwasys look so good frozen in time...

There is no such thing as tasteful or vulgar photos.

I like to think I shot BDSM with class, you may think different, some know its impossible...

Its all art, some good, some bad, some you like and some you don't.

I would like to know where that definition is shown.  I know "ain't" is now in the dictionary but just because it is in a dictionary does not make it proper English.  It is an abortion of proper English that some group has chosen to expound on, something like the word "disrespected".

And to answer your question, it's very subjective. Depends on the point of view of the viewer.  Sometimes I see a shot and go "wow" and decide I want to shoot some in the same style.  Other times I see a shot and go, "how rude" and think the shot is just there to show off her pussy.

Maybe it depends on how well the shot was done, or how attracted I am to the model's body, or how much testosterone I have in my blood stream at the moment.

It was my retouch; I posted the original in POTD18+ and was evicted....

The original was ADORED by the model; the mods here were less impressed....

It comes down to quality of the photograph at that point, in many cases. A model can be in the exact same pose and setting, and one guy can make it gorgeous, the other can make it gross, based solely on skill. Then theres also lighting and angles.

It also depends on what else is going on in the photo. Is the model making your typical  penthouse "oh fuck yeah give it to me" face, where are their hands, how is their body positioned, what is the setting, is she grasping a giant dildo, etc.
