Seems obvious, but the real value in the network comes from...networking on it. Rather than talking to yourself, or just posting status updates about your own work: Follow the 80/20 rule. 80% talking and interacting with other people, most relevant to what you do, 20% promoting yourself. Actually even less than that, I'd say more like 90/10.
