Minimal to no post. With all the editing queens out there let's see your art w/out Photoshop work or minimal Photoshop work such as softening. Yes, I know the sun is a light but in this case I am hoping to see more with the beauty dish overpowering the sun vs. using it.

1. Please show your photo (not link it) unless 18+

2. Diagrams or please tell us how it was lit

3. Post limited to softening, saturation/contrast changes.. no background changes or heavy post work. If you care to share "what your post was" then that would be great too.

I do have another one light post - but is open to pretty much all 1 light beauty dish (2) with the sun setups. As stated above, I would like to see the overpowering of the sun but welcome to post whatever! - Thanks in advance guys/gals! Can't wait to see examples and diagrams!

Most of the time I shoot with only a single beauty dish for lighting. I don't use it as a beauty dish, per se, since I keep it around 15 feet away, but I love the light I get from this set up. I love the highlights on the skin and it produces shadows that are hard, but with a softer edge to them than if I used a smaller reflector. Since you ask about overpowering the sun, I suppose the setup would be similar. The first shot is film with no post work at all (even the dust spots are left) and the second shot is mostly just levels adjustment.

Thank you for your response.... smile Do you use a silver or white BD? I have seen/heard that the white BD is rather useless due to it being like a white umbrella rather than a BD... I assume if I used a sock it would be like an umbrella as well... Sorry for the questions.. I am a newb smile

A good share of my port was done with one white dish (positioned high center, pointed down). I'm not much for post work, so everything was minor adjustments in Lightroom.

I use a white dish (two of them now). From my understanding, white is "softer", and silver will have more hotspots...

White. I have 2, a 24" more traditional reflector shape and a 22" Speedotron. Both are white. I prefer the 24" for this kind of shot and the 22" for actual beauty work where it will be 3 feet or so from the subject.

A silver beauty dish will produce more specular highlights, but IMHO the white dishes already produce enough especially when used at close range where contrast will increase. If I want more highlighting and have the lights at a distance, I use a silver 20" reflector. I think you can see from the examples though, that the white produces a pretty good highlight as it is.

If you are looking to buy a dish, I'd suggest the white first, then add a silver later, but if you don't have enough juice from your pack it may be difficult to overpower the sun with white. I can get a true 1600w/s (not an AB "equivalent" w/s) out of a single head, so I haven't had a problem using the white the rare time I wish to do that. 800 true w/s would be the absolute minimum, but you would be limited in the distance from which you can position the light (maybe 8 feet instead of 12 feet for true overpowering at 1/250). For reference, I get around f16 from a white beauty dish at ISO 100, 1/250 with the subject 15 feet away and the pack at the full 1600w/s.

B u m p! - Thanks for the support thus far! Good informative posts, help us newb's out!

seems to be more difficult than not... People do so much post work, doesn't seem like there are a lot out there that can post in here. What a shame...

Here's a silver dish, though it's a little further away than I'd usually use a white dish. This was just an outtake while the MUA was working. wink

If I remember right, this was just the one light with the model placed in a position to let the light fall off onto the backdrop, keeping the otherwise brighter yellow the right color to match the MU.

Here is my first ever 1 light shoot with a BD only... I know I am not as good as you all, but take it for what it's worth.

I finally get to contribute to my post! lol

Beauty dish to camera left up about 6 feet in the air aiming down at the model.

My AB beauty dish has been my main studio light for a while, even when not used as a beauty dish per se.

Nearly zero post on this one.

22" gridded BD with hair light. BD to camera right; big spot light on BG is from the BD so you can get a good idea where it was located (about 2 foot above model and 5 foot back (camera was just above hair level, 85mm f9 or so)). Minimal PS, only blemish removal, skin softened, and contrast added.

One 22in speedlight beauty dish w/ grid about 4 ft away. Took this shot when I first started out in photography. No post editing besides the garbage photoshop bandaid tool crap I messed up on around her chest area in which I didn't know what I was doing at the time.

Einstein about 1/4 - 1/2 of power inside 60" Photek Softlighter (umbrella-softbox) ... underexposed by 3 stops via ND filter.

It was around 6:30p ... the sun was behind the model on the right side of the camera, hiding behind the trees ...

Post-work ...
- Color select (WB & split tone) in Lightroom.
- Stitching the final image from 32 images in Photoshop
- Burned & dodge via layer masking overlay for contrast & dark feel of the image.
- Retouched the model's skin & body since I want to print this big.
- Sharpening at the end ...
No other post-work ... those hassy on the top right was there since it was backlit, just darken the exposure down make it more of an effect ... wink

I shoot it with a 'Brenizer Method' ... basically you're shooting each segments/parts individually with telephoto lens at wide open aperture and then stitching all those images together to create a wide angle shot (and retain those shallow DoF from your telephoto lens)

http://learningdslr.com/2011/06/the-bre … -panorama/

Try it ... It's not easy nor it is complicated, just need a lot of practice but def. worth time & effort ... wink

AB dish, about 3 foot away, gridless and sockless.

Cleaned up the leaves in post and took care of the pimples. This shot was an accident as it's too hot, however after the shoot was finished it was the one everyone liked the most.

One light, White Lighting x3200 with 10 degree honeycomb grid.

light was up to the right about 2' higher than the model. Shot at F22 to eliminate the room light and clutter from the photo.

No post work.
Although it was scanned from a negative and I had to remove some dust.

Mid afternoon in the Nevada Desert, mostly cloudless day, sun behind the model to camera right.  1 AB1600 at full power into a Hensel BD with the center reflector removed and a polarizer on camera:

Same setup, with the only additional post work being a layer blend, which meets my definition of minimal:
