I want to shoot a curvy model in Bikini inside a studio against a white or back background. Can anyone please help me some cool lighting ideas and ref. model poses/shots which I experiment with. Please send me links to pics or profiles. Thanks a pile.

Curvy means so many things to so many people. You might want to give an idea of what that means to you.

you could use other colour as background. the following photo I used pink backdrop. I also used two back lights to even out the colour.

A single bare strobe positioned as far away from the model as possible and put the model close to the backdrop to create a hard, defined shadow against it. But there's a really good reason I don't shoot bikini in a studio. It just looks out of place. Bikini deserves to be at a pool or a beach or outdoors somewhere.

I like bikini as much in the studio as outside, but then I am land locked except the Mississippi river.

I HAVE shot bikini in the studio, but with east coast beaches an hour away and gulf coast beaches 2 hours away, a thousand lakes, springs and 47 million pools here, I have few excuses to shoot a bikini indoors.

The only time I shoot swimsuit is near water of some sort. Or if it's a unique concept where the deliberate intention is for the swimsuit to look out of place. Besides, I think the issue isn't "poses." A pose that works for that model would be true whether it's on the beach or in a studio. Instead, I think it's concept. For instance, put up blind or divider, add a few more clothes and a mirror and she's trying on bikini's in a dressing room. Or put a tape measure around her waist, make her look elated, and she's checking to see if she lost weight before beach season. Otherwise it's just a cute chick in front of seamless white paper. Ed

Well everyone may have different idea of what looks good (or even what is curvy). I always use softboxes (continuous lights) so my lighting is pretty evenly diffused - not everyone would want that ... anyway, here's 3 bikinis from my port with poses I like, showing a little variety (some are unedited shots). Sometimes a model wants to do swimsuit in studio. Here is one light, and a background to suggest outside.

A bikini indoors is no less appropriate than lingerie is outdoors. There's an awful lot of pinup bikini work been done in a studio. Besides, in the pacific NW, that would mean only shooting bikinis 3 months out of the year!

I live in Canada so we have 2 summer months for shooting at the beach. But I agree shooting bikini and swimwear at the beach is much better. In studio looks out of place. But if you have to shoot bikinis in studio, I like hi key on white background is the best way to go for me.

As for the NW, yes I guess so but still better than Alaska or parts of Canada. There are infared gas heaters you can use just out of frame, coats to let model warm up etc. Where there is a will there is a way. There are nudes in the snow shots here on MM. Weather is just one more variable to control/work with. Not to mention there are indoor pools.

I shoot bikinis indoors a lot. I see nothing wrong with it.

I never said there was anything wrong with it. I take cues from the more successful manufacturer catalogs and magazines for direction of where to shoot what. The VS catalog generally shoots their bikini line at a beach. Ujena, PacSun, Billabong, Oneill, Quicksilver, etc... all of their catalog work is outside, by some water. It's in context. Shooting it in a studio just doesn't seem to fit. I see what is being done in the industry and I choose to follow it. If I ever look to put myself out there for actual work, taking pictures of a girl in a bikini in the kitchen isn't going to help me. Or against a white wall. I happen to be fortunate enough to live in a place where there's a lot of options for shooting bikini 10 months out of the year (12 if she's not a wuss) and in a myriad of different places that are appropriate for the apparel. Now, that's not to say that I HAVEN'T shot bikini in the studio, at a model's request, simply to have bikini shots for her agency. But I don't consider that trying. That's just documenting.

I don't either if all the outdoor water is frozen solid and the wind is blowing. Not a problem either if the model wants a great body shot for her port and is opposed for some reason to wearing comparable lingerie. I just think it is not the natural element the bikini was intended for. Would I shoot it under the circumstances I describe. Absolutely. Would it be in my port? Maybe if the model was beautiful with a bikini body and a perfect bikini for her figure.

The pose really depends on what your shooting for, I just finished an online store of a bikini company, all they required was a front and back pose to show the bikini, I shot my model in studio in front of a green screen, Lighting the screen evenly and then the model evenly, Now we can key out the green and add any imagine, or color background the model you like. if you have a green suit use a blue background, as long as the models eyes aren't blue,

I shoot bikini everywhere and with anything. The background and the bikini is the wrapping, the model is the candy. Mel
