native american, is that really the end all replacement word? did the tribes not have names? just because a word has more syllables doesn't make it politically correct



for what its worth, I've referred to them as "natives" before, and other people got offended. ie. "this native chick" "the natives are coming"

Nothing wrong with "Native". "Native Times", for example, is an Indian newspaper. They are officially the "Native American Times" but "American" is usually dropped from the title when referring to it. They also use "Tribal" more than our local Nation does, but I think that's because they cover a much broader area.

"Native American" is the term used by goody-two-shoe suburbanites and city-folk to condescendingly refer to Indians. It's not a term used by Indians around here. They are Indians and proud of it. They are not embarrassed by it nor do they shirk from the term. It is who they are.

If you want to be sensitive to someone, use your experience to call someone what you think is inoffensive. Use the term they refer to themselves as. It is Indian.

The tribe here, and my office is in Indian Territory, openly refer to themselves as Indians. It's in their name. And the aren't a tribe. They are a Nation. This tribe doesn't have a Reservation, although it is sometimes called that and most Indian land consists of Reservations, this Nation has Territories.

Natives is less offensive than Native American, but Indian is the usual term.

However, they would rather be called by the name of their Nation.

The best term to call someone is, of course, by their name. You could also refer to them as an "Onieda" or a "Tuscarora" or a "Seneca". Else, its Indian or a Native. In spoken English, I have never heard anyone refer to themselves as a Native, but I've seen it is writing.

For the Indians around here, there are also no 1/2 Indians or whatever. You are either "Enrolled" or not. If you father was the President of the Nation and your mother is not enrolled, then you aren't enrolled. Period. If you are blue-eyed and blond-haired and your mother is enrolled, then you are enrolled. Period. You cannot identify anyone by looks. Sorry, but it just isn't possible.

Native food is a lot different than non-Native food on the Rez. They much prefer Burger King to McDonalds. Subway is also big. The casino is also a popular place to eat, but it's a bit expensive. It's almost $20 to eat there. Nobody pays prices like that unless it's a special occasion. You can buy a deer for $50 or so from most of the kids.

Oh, and if you want offensive, try Columbus Day. That's offensive to Indians.
