Real ones, not ya'll who whine about being up past midnight. You're just a bunch of lilly assed complainers.
I'm talking legit inability to sleep.
I watch the sun rise several times a week. If I could be out cold by 4am every day I'd be happy.

What do you guys do?

Warm milk with honey. The sugar crash and the warm milk really help. Quiet, relaxation.

If it's really tough count backwards from 300 by 13s

Try to relax, it's the tension.

I've tried it. Does nothing. Sometimes if I'm already tired I can do the alphabet in my head on repeat, skipping the words.

Recently though, nothing works. I'm not even drowsy.

i have to zone out in front of the TV.
if my mind entertains itself it won't shut off.
sometimes this only works every day and a half, i don't always need sleep every night, and sometimes only a few hours at a time to recharge.

I did, in 2007. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, had surgery, don't have the apnea anymore, but still can't sleep. They gave me some Ambien and sent me on my way.

Go see a doctor, but not for insomnia. You've been posting lately about all the medical problems and stress you face daily. You could easily suffer from depression. If that's the case, things like Unisom, Ambien, counting, warm milk, music and other typical insomnia cures won't help. Insomnia is very often a result of stress induced depression. Maybe it's a depression med like welbutrin or effexor you need and not a sleeping pill or an old wives tale.

Some anti-depressants can make insomnia far worse!
Nemi, if it's as bad as you say, you need to go back to your doctor. One that actually solves your issues and doesn't "send you on your way." If it's lack of insurance that's stopping you, perhaps it's time to reconsider and do what needs to be done. You have choices. Not easy ones, but they are choices.
Feel better.

Infomercials -

I have struggled with insomnia off-and on since high school.  Thankfully, right now, I'm in remission and have had a good past 8 months of decent sleep

My brain will not shut off for whatever reason and I'll go weeks with disturbed sleep - or nights with none.  I have gone years with serious sleep disturbances on more nights than ok ones.  My worst was about 4 days, with 3 hours sleep total in those 4 days - (I was a wreck)

The secret (for me) was to short circuit the endless loop my brain was in - without becoming interested enough in something else to have a new loop form.  Reading was interesting  (although I read things before bed now that I have read DOZENS of times - so, as not to have it be interesting)  TV was just interesting enough to focus on the story at hand.  Music was not random enough and songs did not last long enough to drift off.

Infomercials were my answer - just enough to occupy my mind and get it detrailed - but not nearly enough to get me actually interested in Eric Estrada - Selling timeshares in Arkansas.... lol

So, when sleep is borked - I hit the living room couch at about 2 AM - and drift off (finally) to the sound of Forex trading, colon cures, and amazing cooking gadgets.

Read, work on my manuscripts, AVOID newspapers/news sources (they only give me anxiety at night), avoid my kitchen (tongue), and listen to music.

Or, if I'm desperate to sleep, knock myself off with OTC medications OR dip into the sleeping pills my doctor gave me...but they leave me hung over like crazy for the next 48 hours, so I generally don't use those suckers.

I relax for an hour before bed and avoid stimulants (caffeine and anything loud or bright).  If I don't think that alone will work I'll have some Bailey's and/or a sleeping pill and/or read for a bit.

I go to plenty of doctors ( two separate ones yesterday alone) thing is, when you have so many "real" problems, not sleeping isn't exactly high on anyone's priority list.

I know exactly what you're talking about, actually.
You know once they get you sleeping, it will be easier to tackle everything else. Or they can work the other way around, like you said, they need to fix other things first.
You need to find the doctors that work the way YOU need them to....not the other way around. Take charge of your healthcare. Feel better.

Have your tried Ambien racing?

You take the pill in your car about 25 minutes from home and then rush to get home before the pill kicks in in about 20 minutes! It's what all the cool kids are doing these days.

I would be classified as a "lilly assed complainer" should I happen to bitch about staying up past midnight. I don't suffer from insomnia, but see how it fucks up a person's day (and night). I have nothing to offer but my sympathy. I know nothing to help. So, I'll just be here in thought.

I am so sorry for you. It is something I can't even imagine.

Days like tomorrow I start at 6:30 AM and end them at about 1:30 AM, so by the time I find a bed I'm out like a light.

If there's anything I can do, don't hesitate to PM me.

I can lend you the manthing?

I need to be covered in weight/blankets/pillows etc, so I have no sleep issues now. MAGIC.

Only time that sucks is when I need to go stay at my mom's when I'm working in Boston. 2-3 days of almost no sleep. Yay communal sleeping, crazy cats, and mom snoring. O.O

I know it sounds nuts, but I have less sleeping issues when I am next to a  large warm human. Next to me all humans are qualified as large lol

Deal. Fair warning I've been told when I can't fall asleep I can be VERY annoying when I decide I want attention from the person snoozing next to me.

It's a covert and devious ploy for attention and affection, snuggling, scratching behind the ears and belly rubs. If you have nowhere to go but on top of me or under me, I win! big_smile

I wouldn't call myself an insomniac, per se, because (usually) I just can't be bothered to sleep at night. It's inconvenient! And boring. If there's one sure fire way for me to be utterly unable to sleep, it's to be bored. I seriously have to be entertained to go to bed. I usually try to watch a movie in my mind (I come up with a general plot and run with it inside my head until I fall asleep and it turns in to a dream), and that works. Unless I can't come up with one, then I just read some random online ficlet until I pass out.

Story of my life. It's 2-something and I MAY miraculously fall asleep within an hour. I have delayed sleep phase syndrome. The fun part is that there isn't essentially isn't any medicine to help or lifestyle changes to counteract it. I'll manage to fall asleep at 2 or 3 for three days straight and be so happy about that, then suddenly I can't fall asleep before 6 am. Then BOOM, my sleep schedule swings later and later out of control for a few weeks. I'll get five hours of sleep and be more tired than a zombie all day long, then around 11 pm I'm wide awake and can't sleep until even later than the night before.

Don't you love it when friends, family, and coworkers are all, "Well, just try harder to go to bed early. I have a hard time too but you can do it." Hadn't thought of that one!

They say that both intelligent and creative people tend to stay up later than most though wink

I don't sleep anymore, haven't really slept in the past 2 or 3 years, I have had troubles going back as far as 15 years ago. I can go to bed at 9pm, be out in minutes and awake an hour later and not go back to sleep, I function on an average of about 2 hours of sleep each night, there have been times I was awake for 3 or 4 days straight, this was okay when I was 20, but now that I am on the door step of 50, its not so much fun anymore.

I have tried everything no script you can think of, nothing works, at best it may work for 1 or 2 nights and then nothing, I haven't tried prescription drugs as I am pretty much anti drug, well I did let the Dr prescribe one med that had a really bad effect on me, it didn't do much for my sleeping but it did drag me down into a serious depression and I was very quick to become enraged, so I stopped taking it.

I long for a good nights sleep on a regular basis.

I have come to the conclusion that my inability to sleep is health related, High Blood Pressure, High Blood Sugar, early stages of neuropathy in my feet. HBP & HBS both can cause insomnia, and insomnia can contribute to HBP and HBS, I am working on getting these under control, but its a long slow battler.
