I am 100% sure I don't have a virus, and for the hell of it I downloaded and scanned my computer, just to double check (i'm on a mac, there also aren't any mac viruses out there in the wild, so to speak, right now). No pop ups or anything, I run ad blocker so I don't have to deal with it. It was just completely random. I had no idea FB was hacked into recently, that makes it even more suspicious!

Let me make things clear for those who wish to attack me: I didn't install anything (i'm not an idiot) and I don't have a virus on my cpmuter- unless mm is infected with one! It lets me bypass it. I was venting more along the lines of my pc friend being forced (he didn't either) to download a program that isn't worthy, anyhow. Was wonderinf if anyone else had encountered it.

There is, however, a feature on fb that will actually flag you if it thinks your computer has a virius. Which is why i suspected a fb hack.

There was one piece of malware about five or six months ago, but Apple patched the vulnerability almost immediately. There was also the recent Java problem, which Apple dealt with by blocking Java until the security hole was patched. But no viruses…in fact, the last live virus for the Mac was approximately 7-10 years ago, and it was next to harmless.

2. Said Apple Engineer checked the error  - it was, in fact, Facebook making the complaint. It wasn't a popup.

3. Unless you're a Facebook employee, it would be wise not to say something like that quite so emphatically. It could very easily be some security setting that they turned up too high as a reaction.

4. Then don't add a #4. Doing so is kind of silly.

It does sound like the PC has been infected -- it intercepts an attempt to open the Facebook URL with a message asking the computer's user to download & run a "special" chunk of software. 

I would never follow directions that arrive to me unsolicited like that.  I might get someone (anyone other than the anti-virus software recommended) to scan my computer. 

I seriously doubt that Facebook scans its members devices for viruses.  Indeed, though, it would be nice if Facebook had a customer support department to which these issues could be reported.

I just recently quit my job as a Senior Technical Advisor for Apple. We're trained to deny & blame. So I know for a fact the Java issue was more than they let on.

There area Mac viruses, but hackers don't bother too much with Apple users because nobody does any real work on them, so why bother. Particularly when there are so few Mac users.

When was your "roommate" certified, back in 1987? It took me all of 10 seconds in Google to find over a dozen different articles about different Mac viruses in 2012.

The whole point of these malware attacks is to make it look like it comes from a legit source that you trust whether that's Facebook or Microsoft.

The solution on a PC is to start task manager and use it to end the task for the browser you're running.

Unfortunately, I had the same thing happen to me
I was worried it was malware too

So I logged out of facebook, closed my browser, scanned my computer with my Kaspersky anti virus (Full scan, not just a quicky) it came back clean

I restarted my Browser (Firefox) and logged back into facebook

Still got the message

Tried working around it, saying my computer is fine
No could do
I had to accept the Macafee link to continue

However, the scan appeared to happen in Facebook, not like it was a separate program.
And it came back "No virus found"
Then it allowed me to go to my feed with no further problem

So if I do have a virus, it's a virus that Kaspersky is not finding

I am laughing at "almost immediately". Apple is notorious for not doing anything about reported OSX vulnerabilities.
