Hey guys,

I'm trying to shoot guys this year as much as possible, and want to learn how to retouch men's skin, facial hair, eyebrows, etc.

I've got my first dodge and burn work where the model wanted a softer look (I usually shoot with unmodified light on men), and thought I'd put it out there for critique.

Don't hold back - I've been using Photoshop for a very long time, but have only been dodging and burning for 2 years.

Here's a sample of what I'm going for in the final look:

Will PM it to you as I haven't received permission for before/after with the talent.

PM sent - not sure you need it, I've not done much aside from a crop and some dodge and burn, but happy to see what you think.

Not understanding this but anyways...

To me really all depends on how you like the final image to look. At the moment I think the eyelids for instance they need a lot of attention and you seem to have lost a big deal of texture on his face. Have you used a kind of blur??
Pay attention to colour, as there are parts that have different tonalities!!

Ah will do. Yes end up frequency separating some of the cheek to remove the glare. It may have been heavy handed.

Well, you have used the wrong radius as it is affecting texture big time!!

I think you should tone down the effects. Reveal most "texture" back. Men don't want to be portrayed like Ken dolls, either. :-)

This!...........I wouldn't soften the skin, I would probably make it more detailed.  LOL

Ah yes, but I was asked to make it softer as the original was quite... "sharp". Will find a middle ground wink

needs more detail in the skin...mens skin are generally more detailed than womens and that's the visual strength that your images has to project...so watch out for that, next time ;-)
