David at your regular job at Piggly Wiggly...do they pay in advance?  No. No one who is legit..will send you a check in advance and you keep some of the money and send the rest back...this scam is  as old as when Jesus rode Dinosaurs some 65 million years ago.

What cracks me up is how so many people wonder who would ever fall for this obvious scam and yet Facebook has been filled with people sharing a meme claiming that Zuckerberg is going to give them fortunes if they share the photo. So if you ever wondered what kind of idiots would ever fall for a scam like this, look no further than your friends list on FB

National campaign for a medical/biotech company?   Plural?

"no open or live casting please for this gig. Models are selected based on their unique personality,"  Personality is judged how?

A national campaign is --
-- Big $$$ budget
-- No production risks are allowed       --  repeat   No production risks allowed
-->   =  Agency models booked near the relevant studio unless personally known/vouched for   by the photographer

It just won't be someone "new" to the production team -- it's just business.

So yes --> scam

Even if the first small deposit check clears there will be issues with whatever  follows as confidence is now built up,  whether that is an "error" in the amount on the "wardrobe" checkor a request to forward a portion to another "team member"

Odd that you would be expected to buy the wardrobe unsupervised don't you think?
Remember - if it was real   No production risks allowed

+1   once again the content never matters, is there any other job
or gig on planet that over pays you by check and tells you to "forward" the rest to someone else.
yes its that simple no matter the content of the letter, I'm always telling models this,
skip to the "payment" part save time, frustration, confusion, etc.

This is a common scam, not just limited to the photography world but pops up everywhere.

I have been saying/telling here that MM should make all newbies take/pass the 'test' before profiles approved. This could've been easily avoided.

I got an email that was almost word for word like this. I went through with everything, and have received the check, and was in contact with a guy who was very VERY pushy with me via text when there was all these problems occurring with the check. I have now been on the phone with my bank two days in a row, at this point, not sure what to do here. So much stress for no reason it seems after reading this!
I also got this email recently for an Alex Perry photoshoot... Any thoughts?
Hello,

"Your Upfront payment along with the stylist's funds for accessories for the shoot would be delivered to your address Today by USPS. Please check your mailbox for it.

From the amount you'd  received...You would deduct the sum of $400, which is the guarantee fund for your participation in the shoot and you would transfer the remaining funds to the stylist. Funds would be used to procure your other fashion accessories for the shoot. You get to keep all the accessories and some of the clothes you'd model in.

Ensure that you Deposit the check immediately in your account via mobile deposit for just 24 hours and once the check clears within/after 24 hours, deduct your $400 part payment and get back to us for further instructions.

However, due to the slight logistics and communication issues we experienced...We have now rescheduled the shoot to October 23rd and 24th. We sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused. We want to make sure you have an amazing time working with us.

Check and respond to all emails. Please respond to this email with the confirmation that you received the check.

We look forward to working with you.

Best Regards,

Ted Lewis."

This is the email I have received...

While you are at it . . . Don't forget to give them all your bank account information, your mother's maiden name, your social security number, and the passwords to your computer.
Sometimes it helps if you send nude photos of yourself and your lovers.

Heh, I didn't even notice how old it was!  Just goes to show this scam's been around a while (though the latest offer was for $2550 not $1696...inflation.)

I almost fell for this same scam, the first day I signed up on MM, since I didn't know any better.  Even went so far as to provide my email address and phone number.  BIG mistake.  As soon as I wizened up I ended all communication and blocked them.  There must be some people that look for new accounts on here to try to exploit.

They're saying that they're going to send you a check for just a shade under $2k. Believe it when you have the money in your account.

I'm sure that the money disappeared way back in 2015.

Don’t even believe it then.  How this scam works is that the mark deposits the check, sees the balance, distributes the money , then the check bounces or the cashiers check is found to be fraudulent.  Then the bank comes back to the mark and reverses the fraudulent deposit, which may not happen for a few days to a couple weeks. The Mark is out the payments they made in distributing per the scammers instructions

As others have said, the “Advance fee” scam has been around for a long time.

Edited to remove the dumb ass advice now hidden

Come on MM Mods, this is a perfect example of someone giving out terrible advice that could cost a victim of this type of scam well over a $1000.00 dollars.

If the person receiving the check is in any way smart, they'll wait until their bank clears the check before doing anything else. That should only take 3 or 4 days. If it doesn't clear, they can report it as fraud.

In this case of course, they wouldn't need to wait even that long to know that this is obviously a scam. An amateurish one at that.

Your advice is, as usual, ill-considered and, quite frankly, stupid.
Anyone banking a cheque which they believe to be fraudulent (or would be considered fraudulent by a person with any sense) is likely to be regarded by the bank to be a conspirator in the fraud, prosecuted and culpable for any losses the bank might incur as a result.
