I'm a complete novice to body painting, but I'm looking into purchasing a starter kit for a particular cosplay that I have in mind.

Hint: I need to be green.

I have no experience with airbrushing whatsoever, and have no idea of where to start.

This Master Airbrush set was recommended to me by another cosplayer: http://www.tcpglobal.com/ECOKIT-18.html … yXOhFrJFL, but I thought I'd post a topic here to get a wider range of opinions.

I am working on a bit of a time crunch; I'd like to have a set purchased by mid month. Any advice or tutorials would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking to do anything more intensive than getting an even color on the vast majority of my body.

Thanks so much!

You can use sponges and brushes to apply Paint, I would go with mehron Paradise or Wolfe FX. You can get a smooth finish. Air Brushing isn't something you just pick up and start to paint with. It does take skill and practice.

You might want to consider a compressor with a tank. That is supposed to give a smoother airflow.

If you have no airbrush experience, I would consider a water based cake product like Wolfe FX, Mehron or Kryolan. Hydro sponge apply is quite effective for self-application.

Airbrushing yourself can be.... entertaining even for someone with extensive airbrush experience.

If you do decide to go for an airbrush, I would start with a side or bottom feed .35 or .5mm needle/nozzle airbrush with a compressor that has a 35psi working pressure (max pressure will be 70-125 depending on brand). .5mm will be a faster application. The smaller the needle/nozzle size, the smaller the spray pattern, the slower the application. Most makeup artists don't go below .35mm unless they're into special effects.

You do NOT need the expense of a model with an air tank so long as the airbrush isn't larger than a .5mm needle nozzle (larger tip sizes or touch-up spray guns will need a higher air flow - cfm - or they will "out spray" the air source.)

I work with European Body Art for airbrush colors - and recommend their VIBE water based colors for good, fast opacity.

EDIT: Your product link is to an equipment set that is.... shall we say bare bones but *should* do the job you want. Not a lot of versatility, though.

Again, I would back up what Lisa says. She knows her stuff.

My experience with the Master brand airbrush equipment is that it is total crap. Do not recommend.

A related question:  do various states have licensing requirements to do body painting as with cosmetology?

That's a good question, although I don't know details from the majority of jurisdicitons I do know that Washington State puts bodypainters in the same category as massage parlors and bath houses instead of hair and beauty salons where you'd think it would be categorized.

I know that many states that required makeup artists to be licensed (as a cosmetologist) have an exemption for mua's working in motion picture, theatrical pruducutions, or photography studios.

hi Voodoo, I love bodypaint cosplay images, but there might be some options and would like to know more about the project itself to better advise.

I have been doing my own take on cosplay superheros and have made a pretty good library of vector emblems. I have also *perfected a technique of digital bodypaint in PS.
I'm on my tablet right now, but will try to get an image posted soon.

May I suggest a site like jestpaint.com to look at their Color Swatches to compare greens from different companies? Also, though airbrushes are a ton of fun once you get the hang of 'em, consider something like a Kabuki brush for this project. Nice, even coverage & blending, easy cleanup. If you need to be green, you may also want a highlighting color & a shadowing color as well as a medium tone.
Sillyfarm.com also has a good array of brands of paint to choose from here in the US.

Thanks for all of the wonderful advice!

I ended up going with Mehron Paradise's water based paints - got enough to do my body and my face, only to have to re-prioritize the cosplay. "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry" indeed. The bright side is that it gives me enough time to tinker with what I have.

Once I get around to experimenting with it (because free time, what's that?), I'll have to take a few photos to post.

An airbrush is a very valuable tool for cosplayers into makeup. Airbrushes can help with makeup, costumes and props.
I use and sell a lot of Paradise and great easy to use blending brushes ( http://www.extrememakeupfx.com/Body-Pai … -br-rb.htm) (esp to cosplayers)) but do try to save up and get a quality airbrush. There are plenty of ways to learn, with airbrush a class is always worth your expense and time.
