BACKSTORY: I recently moved and temporarily took a hiatus from my successful on-location makeup business in Texas when I relocated to the NYC area with my husband. My business in Texas was 100% legitimate and set up as an LLC through the state. In Texas you don't have to be licensed as an esthetician to do freelance on-location makeup and I felt secure by having an LLC formed that protected my personal assets.

NOW TO MY QUESTION: I've been receiving a huge number of emails from potential clients asking to book with me but I am very weary about taking on clients without having a estheticians license here in NY as I am not 100% sure of the rules and regulations after all of the research I have done. I don't want to go through the effort of setting up an LLC here in New York only to not be able to work freelance because I am not properly licensed with the state. I know I can work on movie/television sets but my "bread and butter" has always been bridal work.

Does anyone know the freelance requirements for New York? Am I allowed to freelance (outside of the salon environment) without a estheticians license?

Thank you in advance for your help!

"A makeup artist in New York must be licensed through the state as an aesthetician (a person who specializes in skin care, like facials and waxing), which requires 600 hours of training along with passing state exams. An EMT license in New York requires between 140 and 170 hours of training, "

"Because no school offers the shampooer curriculum, no one else may become a shampoo technician who is not already licensed as one, meaning that the state has created a monopoly for existing license holders,"
