I'm having a problem syncing the miniTT1 to the FlexTT5.

Canon 50D
580EXII Speedlites

until now I've been triggering with the miniTT1 and old Pocketwizard Plus, which performs flawlessly but limits My shutter speed.

Picked up a couple of the Flex TT5's as receivers but cant get them to work, the lights are on but no one is Home. Factory reset, latest firmware.

I can sync to 1/8000 with the TT1 and flash on Camera, once I place on the receivers I have nothing.... is there a trick to this?

Both Camera and Flash are in M.

What am I missing here?

Thank You!

I caught the 1/160th calibration shot but guess what they are saying is first time set up should be in ETTL?

There is RF noise with the 580 flash that causes the Flex to miss the signal.  Are you using the hot shoe adapter and black bag on your 580 flashes that come with the Flex unit?

whatever mode you are using for the rest of the session; manual if using manual, ttl if using ttl. the first trigger (when everything is setup correctly) doesn't need to be 1/160 sec. they only want to be sure the first flash is seen by camera. once you know the sync is solid, you can use any shutter speed that works.

with speed lights, all else fails, setup for basic trigger only (no ttl) until you are sure you have both units and flash talking first. then switch to ttl & test again. with studio lights, write down & save each configuration under test. some updates will not read older setting files - which is silly. they should have a standard config file format that always restores - but they aren't doing that. writing config down is the sure way.

I was having some issues with the Mini to Flex and finally replaced the mini with another Flex and things have been much more consistent.. Excluding when the batteries are getting low..

I'm not using these items, I'd heard it's a myth. I'll try.

9/9 Update: Followed the 'first time setup' instructions to the T (in ETTL), fresh batteries and used the shoe adapter between the Flash and the PW.

I am now successfully syncing to 1/8000 sec using off Camera Flash in M, smile I'm stoked.

Thank You for the input/insight everyone!

Good to hear.  Enjoy.  Just as an FYI I too do not use the black bag, but do use the hot shoe adapter.  Seems to be reliable enough.

Happy shooting!

Edit:  Sorry response would have made more sense if I logged into my other account "Fine Art Exposures"

No myth and it was strange that Canon were not particularly embarrassed by the RF noise problem. Surprised in hindsight that they passed CE testing.

With the TT1 / TT5 make sure they have the same firmware version installed. If buying them at the same time and updating at that point then easy enough but if then adding some more at a later date ................

If having problems 'in the field' remember there is the 'learning mode' which you can use to sync the channels and settings across units.
