Hi,

I have been inspired to produce high fashion photos from the film, "Neon Demon."
http://fashionista.com/2016/06/neon-demon-costumes

I know the content of the film is very graphic but I would love to replicate my own vision from these costumes.

I also need advice. I'm highly considering working with a model who would be willing to muse this for me and shoots pretty much these concepts.

Obviously, these concepts also require a hair/makeup artist and I'm ok with that.

First, thanks for opening my eyes to this upcoming film.  I'm so enamored with the overall style and vibe.  I think the costumes are cool, but nothing too crazy or avant garde for the high fashion world.  Adding the blood and/or glitter elements will be the challenge to do tastefully.

It doesn't appear you have done a lot of work in this genre.  Make sure you find a very experienced stylist!

I'd suggest that you read books and articles on fashion photography until you can be a little more specific than just "I want to do a fashion shoot; I need advice."

You're welcome, I hope you enjoy that film.

Trust me, if I am paying a stylist she will be very experienced.

And... what would be some books and articles on fashion photography you would recommend?

I didn't take a look at your profile so this isn't a critique. Before you tackle on a high fashion concept, you need to ask yourself if this concept is something you can actually do. Will you be able to find a model with a fashion look, a makeup/hair team that has editorial level work, a wardrobe stylist that has access to the particular wardrobe, and do your skills fit this ? If you can answer yes to all those questions then, I say go for it. I have had shoots where we had a concept but a few people (myself included in some cases) didn't have the right aesthetic or skills and the photos weren't portfolio worthy.

Given the nature of your question I'd start with one of the most basic and general books - something like Lara Jade's "Fashion Photography 101" Or Doorhof's "Mastering The Model Shoot". Or better, both and several more. Forums are for questions like "How to do get this particular look in a skin retouch?" or "My lighting and post aren't getting enough pop out of a model's hair; any suggestions?" They're not really a good resource for "I want to do X, where X is the subject of a entire 4 year degree course. What do I do?"

Or if reading a book is not your style, then google for articles on fashion photography. But questions this general - not a good idea! Get to the stage where you ask a reasonably specific question before using a forum.

My strong suggestion is that you work closely with a stylist, someone who can pull a variety of looks and who has a portfolio that showcases a familiarity with shots similar to the ones that you want.

I saw the film in Cannes and was bitterly disappointed, it didn't dot he trailer justice. Looks good though.

I would suggest starting small and build a team first before trying something as ambitious.

Not only do you need a hair stylist, MUA, clothe stylist, but for more lavish setups you'd probably need a set designer too. And as much as people try, your model has to be a fashion model not a commercial model.

The best recent "film" about fashion has to be Kill La Kill; you have to love a show that uses fight scenes to parody the glorious insanity of a modern runway show.

Is that a Manga film?

Anime. The writers actually understand what a high fashion runway show is - a chance for designers to show off concepts and fabrics that will influence production fashion. So the most important characters wear insane but very powerful outfits, then the outfits get less powerful and less insane as you move down the social ranks, and major fights often work like cat walks shows with the outfits getting more and more insane. The show is partly a pun on the fact that the Japanese say fashion and facism identically. It references Triumph Of The Will and Socialist Realism, and one character - German and most powerful person in fashion  - made me think of a gender-swapped Karl Lagerfield.

The Neon Demon visually speaking is a film that is all about color, lighting, and composition. Similar in many ways to another horror film "Suspiria".

To develop your eyes I'd highly recommend checking out the Fashion Spot forum and checkout their magazine section. Vogue Italia, Numero, and V magazines have editorials that I'm sure influenced the art direction in the Neon Demon.

For photographers I'd recommend checking out Miles Aldridge and Guy Bourdin's work.

For makeup check out Pat McGrath, Val Garland, and Kabuki

You can find all of their work on the forum I mentioned above.
