We're just west of Orlando. My wife and I along with 3 dogs and 3 cats took shelter at my in law's. The hurricane went right up the middle of the county between our house and the in laws. Of course, we're on the east side of it so we get the stronger winds.

Outside of combat, this has been the scariest experience of my life. Things should be dying down shortly (its 1:45am here) and hopefully I can get back to my own house tomorrow to assess damages.

Anyone from Polk County know how things went in Haines City? My parents have a place on Lake Marion, and can't get a hold of anyone to find out if they even have a place to spend this coming winter.

I lucked out in Flagler County, power went out around 12:20 AM, and came back on at noon today.  Lots of water, but it stayed away from my house. Lots of friends weren't as lucky. One lives on the ICW and had just got her house livable from Mathew last year that put 3' of water in it. She texted me last night at 3AM and said they had 2' come in at high tide.

It was a hell of a night, I feel for the people that didn't do as well.

Interesting read here on how IRMA could have been MUCH WORSE!   The peeps on Florida can thank their neighbors to the south (Cuba) for taking on this hurricane at Category 5.  Cuba's coastline scrubbed off quite a bit of IRMA's intensity, giving Florida a big break from the massive winds and storm surge that Cuba was devistated with.  Over 40 people died thru-out the Caribean Islands and Cuba from IRMA's assault.

Irma couldn't be forecast within about 100 miles just days before landfall yet you think there's some reason to believe a 10 day forecast for Jose?

The models have a spread from Florida to Iceland in the next 6 days.

There are an amazing, incredible, and adequate number of shelters in Palm Beach County which allow pets (Two, yes TWO) and they are interested in pursuing felony charges against people that left their animals behind?  I kept hearing about people being turned away from shelters and how people came days early to make sure they got a space and there are TWO shelters that allowed pets?!  (Do I seem outraged?)

I don't agree, for a heartbeat, about leaving your animals behind, but maybe, just maybe, it is Palm Beach officials who are felony level stupid?  Are they going to bring felony charges against people that left behind their horses and cows?

In 2015 a syrian girl brought her Hermann's tortoise all the way from Syria through half of Europe to Germany. That is love.

(Just to discover that this species is a protected one and is not allowed to be importet. Now it's living in a zoo...)

Gonna be LOTS of busy chainsaws all over Southern Florida.  Saw video after video with thousands of trees down everywhere.  Many of them had crashed onto houses and cars... hmm

I have just been able to get back online. Haines City still has a lot of trees down and power is out to much of it. I hope you have gotten in touch with your folks by now. If not, send me their address and I will see if I can find out something.

In Lakeland, I am still without power or water.

They finally got a hold of their preacher who went over and checked out their place. The old place did great only loosing one awning from a window. Didn't even blow the screens out of their patio. Their area is without power too.

I really appreciate your news and offer of help!

Just read this from a gun forum I hang out on. The poster lives in the Keys and posted this today.

"At least two of my co-workers homes were destroyed. One by fire from a downed power line, the other by a tree that fell on house and destroyed it. A third co-worker had 3+ feet of water in his house, no word on how much physical damage from the flooding. Still have not heard from several co-workers at this point. Curfew was raised from 7 PM to 10 PM starting last night.

I should be back in my house tonight and will have a better chance to go over damage at that point. Anyone want to come and clean out my freezer and refrigerator that was without power for a week?  I'm afraid to even open the doors.  County still not letting anyone in other than residents and people that can show proof of employment from MM 73 North.

Now the grim side of the story. They are pulling bodies out of the water in the lower and middle keys daily. At this point they are not releasing much of this to the media. I heard the body count is in the 70's right now from people that refused to leave.  Very sad. One of our employees was permitted to go into the restricted area to work on one of the emergency recovery centers in Marathon and that is where he learned of the deaths.

It is pretty depressing around here."

Heard from a couple friends of mine in Key West (they were using a land line out of the Green Parrot  .  .  .  figures, drinkin' already  .  .  .  ), they said Key West did fairly well, some wind damage, a little flooding, but not nearly as bad as some previous storms, no power, water or internet though  .  .  .  not so sure my house out on Doctor's Arm in Big Pine did so well, haven't heard or seen anything yet  .  .  .  fingers crossed  .  .  .

By last Thursday the track was for Irma to pass right over my house, so we changed our minds and decided to bug out. We managed to get a flight out with 1 hour to spare on Friday afternoon, just before they closed Palm Beach airport. We were supposed to leave from Boca Raton, but they ran out of jet fuel... so did Fort Lauderdale.

We flew to Atlanta on a tiny twin-engine Citation Jet:

We came back today, and there was some damage... but Irma's last minute course correction westward saved our asses.

A model/friend who was supposed to come visit last week got stuck in Jamaica, but came to our house yesterday. Bless her heart. she was hard at work cleaning up some of the mess when we got home today:

Its pretty amazing actually, most  of us on our street already have most of our stuff piled into huge piles by the street. We're told that FEMA will pick it all up within 6-8 weeks. I hope another hurricane doesn't come along and blow the crap all over the place... that would be one huge mess.

I think you're safe.  The dimestore YouTube meteorologists don't see threatening your 'FEMA piles' within the next 2 months... borat
