I have a friend that has asked me to do some photos to give to a friend. She want me to change a JPEG to an pastel illustration. I said I have some people that can do retouching on a site I work off, but she is a little modest about herself and does not want others to look at her like this. These are a gift so money is a little tight.

I have both Photoshop and Illustrator CS6. Do either one of these two programs make this art work?

Thanks
Taylor

I'm not real sure of what you want, but this might get you started.

Yeah, in Photoshop CS6 there are filters that mimic drawings/paintings. You can also create a blank layer and brush on the skin and then create another blank layer and set it to color to brush on the makeup and it should give an illustration vibe to it (I would do this on low flow brush that way it would transition better). I don't have illustrator so can't help you on that end, unfortunately. Other than that I'm not really sure how you get that effect. Hope my suggestions helped.

I should add that Corey Barker's technique there works best when the original is lit as you see it - relatively soft contrast which later gets a contrast boost in Photoshop.

Photoshop is great, but not super easy to handle to get what one want smile  I love Elvgrens work and wanted to do something that would look a little drawn/painted but a little strange and used mainly surface blur to get rid of real skin features as you can remain contrasty edges. And then one can add som highlights and stuff. It was a long time ago I did them so I don't remember completely.

If you work in photoshop, use the technique of changing color tones by selecting shadows, lights and halftones and filling the mask with theme colors with pinup images. Works on soft light levels. The screenshot that I show you is an image of the exceptional Aaron Nice video. This is my test to show you, but I only needed it for the model already dressed up by Pinup. The technique is not explained in the video and I do not know if in the paid Aaron video, he used my own technique. Photoshop is a really good way for your work. Bye

If you like this PM me and I can give you the contact information for the retoucher I worked with (she's no longer on MM).  She was quite reasonable.

BTW bought the tutorial from Phlearn that the coca cola pinup screeshot is taken from.  It may have been good but my Photoshop-foo was to weak to be able to follow it.  I found it confusing.

Pinup lighting often uses what William Mortensen called "Contour Light" which accentuated the edges of the subject with darker, (and in paintings, often warmer and more saturated) shades. They are often front-lit.

Okay everyone, I would like you to see some things I did using your suggestions with Photoshop to try to create the look I was trying to work toward. I was trying to work on a style similar to the Elvgren or Vargas 1950's pinups.  I watched this video several times and have some issues with several of the shortcuts being used only because I do not know all the shortcuts or do not understand what the author was saying in regards to how each line was handled. If you have the time to watch the video and are experienced to the point you would like to give me a line by line run down on the shortcuts so I could practice more, that would be much appreciated. I understand if you do not.

I know this may not be the right forum for critiquing, but I have some of the shots I was playing with to practice with to obtain the style of pinup look for the 1950's. I borrowed some images from MM that I thought would work for me to practice with. I do not remember the photographers I borrowed them from as some were in a file of my documents of posing styles from several years ago.

Here is the link to the folder in my port. Please note some images are 18+. Edit: The Images are no longer available to view. There was some poor judgement on my part and do to this I have removed them from my profile and members only viewing.

I understand that this is the wrong place to ask to have a critique but I was hoping for some retouchers would see this and give more advise. Not to many hang out in the critique forums.

Thank you everyone for your advise in this matter. I would still like to know more about this subject mater. So I still am looking for input from digital artist to help me further this project.

Please know I would like to know more about the editing of the Vargas and Elvgren 1950's pinups and how to go about refining my skills.
