Eliminating the home button allows more real estate for a bigger screen. The home button was also used for thumbprint security. The 12 uses facial recognition for security-just point the phone toward your face and it unlocks.

Instead of the home button, now you just swipe upwards to get home or close a window. It took me about 5 minutes to adjust to no home button. It’s an improvement.

According to this you can get it back on the Iphone 12...although it might not be to your satisfaction.
