I'm having trouble finding opportunity in my state (Alabama). What advice can I take to start building up my portfolio and finding opportunities to grow myself and a career in modeling?

Thank you!

If you want to build a portfolio thats simple, hire a good photographer.

in general:
location, location, location
its more often about who you know as opposed to what you know.
set realistic goals.

What networking strategy do you suggest I should pursue to find photographers in my area?

Thanks once again!

I suggest that you live in a location that has an active creative community where you can network while finding the gigs you want for music, modeling, acting or any other creative endeavor within your goals. If it means moving from your current location, then that is what you must do.

Ah, that makes sense. I was afraid that might be the case. I will definitely have to do some planning.

I appreciate your insight!
