About Me

The process of handtinting a black-and-white photograph created from a film negative has become a lost art. As a fine art photographer since the 1970s, I am dedicated to preserving some of the traditional methods of photography. I still work exclusively with film and I do all film processing and print making in a wet process darkroom by myself. I am one of a small percentage of art photographers remaining in the world who specializes in handcolored female nudes and handcolored portraiture.

In the early 1970s I began photographing women while in college earning my B.A. degree in English. Upon graduation in 1975 I turned professional as a photographer and opened my studio in Savannah, GA. I was the first photographer in this region to offer artistic nude photographs to clients as private commissions. And I was doing boudoir style photography before that term became commonplace in professional photography. At the same time I was doing commercial work I was also creating a body of artistic work with models. That photography was soon appearing in art galleries and national photography print magazines. I’ve always approached photography as an artist. In doing so I have attempted to impart a timeless quality to many of the images.

In the late 1980s I began creating handcolored photographs from my black-and-white film negatives. To this day I still use artist’s oils and pencils to create each handcolored photograph. Due to the nature of the process, no two handcolored photographs can ever be exactly alike; each is a unique piece of art. My fine art photography is in private collections in North America, South America, and Europe. My photography has been exhibited in art galleries since the 1970s. I’ve participated in numerous solo and group art exhibitions. In addition to my public art work I accept private commissions from clients who wish their images to remain strictly private and confidential. None of that work is ever displayed by me in any venue. In 1998 I launched my website enabling me to interact with the public in a way not previously possible.

By placing this profile on Model Mayhem I hope to attract prospective models and clients as well as to generally educate people about this neglected form of art photography. From experience I am aware that not many people have ever seen in person an actual handcolored photograph nor do they know much about the process itself.
