I've been trying to figure out how to achieve a shimmery/shiny look coupled with dark eyeshadow. Think old 30's starlet eyes (apparently Greta Garbo used charred matchsticks and vaseline, but let's be a little more sophisticated here), or a sheen as wonderfully illustrated by Dandy Amber Marie:

Everything I've tried has looked flat and chalky, or sinks into the creases of my eyes with lightning speed. What are your suggestions for creating this look?

ok well as soon as you want the shiny "wet" glossy look, your going to have to deal with creases in the eye lid. I have used black eye linners on the lid then a coat of vaseline and this works great, or I even did one with a shimmery lip gloss, the only thing is you need to do touch ups durring the shoot to remove the "crease" this is the nature of the beast. The only way to avoid this is not to blink, or open your eyes.
or if you dont want to deal with it durring a photo shoot , hire a make-up artist and let them smile

Alright, *sigh*, I suppose I should just resign myself to tons of touch-ups :p
Thanks for the imput, so at least I'm not off on an unconquerable quest anymore.

This is a special effect type of makeup, in many ways.  Anytime you are dealing with gloss on eyes and creases...you are dealing with movement and slide.  This is left for most headshots and parts modeling, like eyes...and up close showcase photography.  I do these type of makeup shoots last, as they makeup will move and slide around.

What about using a cream or grease paint color (black) then powdering to set w/ neutral or black powder.  Then gloss, vaseline or whatnot on top for shine?  It won't be completely crease-free, but I think the cream will get you the depth of color and powdering will help with the sliding around of the cream.

Hmmm, that sounds workable. I'll keep this in mind.

It still creases up sad I have tried that method.

I know use Calvin Klien Eye Gloss which has minimal creasing.

You first should apply an eye primer and powder it lightly.  Rimmel Underground has a black kohl powder that you can try.  Apply it lightly over Bourjois' Noir Precieux applied wet.  You have to layer something like this thinly over and over to get the depth.  Also Try Urban Decay's Oil Slick Intense Shadow...wet/dry forumla.  Stila makes a gel eye shadow in a pot called Smudge Pots....black, blues, etc.

It's all a matter of trial and error...good luck and have fun!

Make Up For Ever's Black Flash Colour. You will absolutely have to touch this up on set, but it's well worth the extra effort. It doesn't get much thicker or blacker than this. It's like shoe polish! big_smile

PS: That's it on my Avatar's Eyes, topped with my 'Ironic' Loose Color. When you set it with something like that, it doesn't move, but you do lose a bit of that....gooeyness!

I use baby oil gel. Still have to work fast or touch up. Put it on in the very last minute.
I've used Nars eyeshadow underneath in two layers . It's in my main pic on MU profile 5738 (lazy lazy I know).

I simply use waterproof gel eyeliner in blk let it set/dry then top it with thick clear lipglass. The thicker the better, less likely to travel, with less touch-ups. I 've done this many. many times and works for me.smile

Creme eyeliner all over the lid and then apply a thin layer of matte eyeshadow- let it dry down completely then slather on a thick clear lipgloss.
I then used very thick black matte "glitter"- but thats all optional.

See my port for the finished result on Kim Ensey laying in the grass!

I used a waterproof liquid liner from the drugstore. It was a last minute thing, I think it was by wet and wild, something new by them, maybe?

Anyways, it dried shiny and dark.  More of a shiny rubber than vaseline look.

I just used MAC (I know) In Black Tied (it has shimmer in it) and literally just a thick, clear lipgloss. It went to crap afterabout an hour of wearing it but the photos came out well!

I've used eyeliner all over the lid, and then combined lip gloss and black eyeshadow to a kind of gooey paste and put that on top.  It actually lasted really well. I think I touched up maybe once through the whole shoot.
