well you buy the conair pro clips separately in packs of 10 I think, and they are like 2 bucks.

I also use the conair instant heat.

Conair here too.
How many sets you guys have?
I have just one set. I was about to buy one more, but haven't yet because I haven't had a chance to use them. Whenever I had to do hair styling, I used the curling irons to make curls.

Lol, I just bought that kind yesterday.  I still have yet to see if they work but I'm sure they will.

I use the ones by remington.  But I also carry a travel version of a hooded hairdryer with regular rollers.  It works better than the hot rollers sometimes becuase you don't have to wait for the rollers to heat up.  I set the hair then I use the hooded dryer to dry them while I do the makeup.  By the time I'm done with the makeup, the curls are set and ready to go.

I have the portable hooded dryer too, but it takes space:(

I use Babyliss. and I have two sets. Working on a third, although I might look into the spiral kind for this round, but if not I think I'm going to look into the Remington ones since everyone is liking them!

My portable dryer is the same size as most heated roller sets.  And it's thinner and fits perfectly in my case.

I actually have 3 sets. But I am kind of a freak. When I left my husband, I didn't want to go back to my apartment to get the other 2, so I just bought a new set of the jumbo ones. So I have 2 sets of the Large ones and a set that has the 3 different sizes.

I just keep a set in my trunk just in case, but most of the time I just use a curling iron and clip the curls and cool them in place. I find most of the time I get a better result.

I do that a lot too and it works well. But I just like using hot rollers. I am a dork that way.

I use the Babyliss ones as well. They come with both the conpro looking clips as well as the U-shaped clips. They heat up super quickly and work great.

When you turn it on, they heat up after a minute or two. Then you basically wrap sections of the hair around them, secure them like the little photos show, wait for them to cool (which they start doing instantly once you put them in the hair). Once they're cool, un-clip and style.

I like hot rollers personally because I can put them in relatively quickly, then start makeup, and go back once they've cooled and finish the hair.

I don't have the babyliss rollers but I definitely will try them because I have their flat iron and I think it's awesome.  My hair is super thick and it straightens it so fast and beautifully.  And it doesn't dry out thin or fine hair.

It's better than all of the expensive ones that I've tried.

Cool, thanks for the heads up Katie!

I was going to buy a set last night but wasnt sure which one to get between these two....any one use any of these?

I'd like some input- pretty please with cheese on top smile

I liked these since they seem smaller and more comfortable to carry in my kit.

but these look cool too and bring twice as much rollers
(although the system is bigger and bulky)

Hot roller sets never seem to give you enough for a normal sized human head. It seems having 2+ sets is essential

I have those purple ones and love them!!!  I think the plastic rollers with spikes leave the hair lumpy/bumpy.  I use these purple Conair ones even to make my super curly hair more wavy, instead of ringlets.

I have the purple and the blue (multi size) set. Although my hair is super fine and I cant get those clamp like clips to stay in my hair. Are those white ones a different kind that don't come with the set? I noticed Rachel said you can purchase them separately....

And I agree the spiky rollers make hair lumpy. I had an experience with those recently that I did not enjoy...

Yes, I purchased like 4 boxes of the extra clips, since I use two sets of rollers (and I don't like the clamps they come with)

I have started to experiment with hair but I've noticed on the two models that I worked on I used a ceramic curling iron to get the curls and used hairspray on each curl so that it would last longer.

Well halfway though the shoot the hair went limp and all curls were gone. Would I get better results with hot rollers and can you recommend a strong hairspray?

There could be tons of reasons that happened, and I'm no hairstylist, but when that has happened to me, ( i have curly hair, so that shouldn't be an issue...losing curl, that is,) it was because I straightened my hair first with a ceramic flat iron.  Maybe they flat-ironed their hair before they came to the shoot?  It curls initially, then loses it on my hair.

There's a multitude of reasons this could have happened. Honestly, depending on how long the shoot was, it's expected that the curls will fall out eventually. This can be prolonged by properly setting the curls at the beginning, using quality products, as well as touching the hair up just like you would for makeup.

Black Pearl Beauty wrote:

It really depends on the particular style you're going for. Hot rollers are great for certain things, while a curling iron works best for others. Either way, the more important factor is the quality of tools you're using. This can make a huge difference, along with quality hair products of course.

I have an old set of the tiny Remington rollers, and it still works great.  I bought a set of ConAir Ionic, but the lid broke off very quickly, as it did for another artist I know.  The set didn't warm up like I prefer, and without the lid, takes too long to warm up.  I then got the Babyliss rollers, and LOVE them.  I use those ConAir clips too, but up here the price is $10 for 10.  I will be looking to get a set of all jumbo rollers, as I seem to need more of those for my Asian models.

I also have a bonnet for putting over rollers and drying with a blowdryer.  It's a bit slow, but very portable.

I got one set of clips at MUD in NYC and another set at Sally's Beauty Supply. They were cheaper a Sally's.
