I'm going to Boston at the end of July.  I already know I'll have to check any of my liquids (foundations, mascara, lip stuff, etc) but what about my powders?  I'm more worried about my shadows than my foundations (they're liquid, powders break).

Would it be better just to have my kit mailed ahead?

Argh.

I'm confused... How is mailing gonna be any better than takin' it with you??

I just returned from a job in Italy.  I packed all my makeup and hair paraphernalia into one large case.  Liquids in large ziplocks, powders into a zip pouch lined with bubble wrap, and I added a thin sheet of soft foam inside all of my shadow palettes and secured them closed with wide rubber bands.  All appliances etc were wrapped in bubble wrap and all hair products were also in large ziplocks.

Of course I had to check my case with my luggage but it arrived and returned in perfect condition.

The trick is to make sure there is no room for anything to shift around by stuffing empty spots with bubble wrap which also ensures it's all well padded.

Here is a pic of my kit partially unpacked.  You can see the white sheet foam I used to 'blanket' everything:

Last year in Spain, some of my bubble wrap went missing so I stuffed my makeup case with styro coffee cups!  Silly but it did the trick! wink

I flew from LA to Indianapolis last month and had my kit wrapped on a small Heys suitcase that I carried with me to the plane. My liquids, creams and lipsticks were kept in 3 oz bottles and these into ziplog bags. I didn't had any problems.

Then I also flew to Atlanta from Ohio and when I went through the scanner, no beeping or anything wrong but I had to let them open my handbag and check all my stuff inside, my brushes roll was in there and they opened it ... they asked me if I was into painting ... I said yes painting faces hahaha! so not much problem but seems like in the less busy airports are pickier than in the main airports.

I haven't travelled on a plane with it yet, but I've done alot of moving around from location to location and it'sc rappy because some of my nice NARS shadows and blushes got chipped - so next time I'll be sure to packk everything with a layer of foam in it...

Well another reason I'm thinking about just mailing my kit is because I'm a photographer.  I'm going to be carrying on my camera equpiment.  I think if I take y'alls advice and just buble wrap everything, I think my kit will be ok if I check it.

Thanks guys smile

Not necessarily.  Security has stopped me and gone through every item in my kit testing powders etc. for almost an hour.

Regadless, I guess it beats worrying about whether or not it'll show up or not on the other end...

I suppose the chances that it'll happen are slim so I wouldn't worry about it.  I was just sharing my experience as I travel quite a bit. smile

I just went to the Bahamasfor a shoot and I packed all of my makeup and hair supplies in their own suitcase and checked it all.

There were only 2 casualties....1 was a pallette that had 2 eyeshadows come loose and went cuckoo all over the place but it was ziploc'd so no harm no foul. The other was my fault...last minute I tossed a loose chanel lipgloss in the bag because I knew security might toss it. Well, the top snapped off and goopy glittery goo was all over! Yuck! But since everything was ziploc'd I just had to wipe everything down.

That bubblewrap idea is brilliant..something for next time! Check everything and don't run the risk. On my way back from San Francisco the security made me toss one of those ittybitty Fresh Breath bottles. You know the ones that only have 1 drop come out at a time? Yeah, some airports are worse than others. FYI avoid Hartsfield Atlanta if you can. What a nightmare!!!  smile

The advantage of shipping over checking is that the entire value of your kit can be insured and (more or less) guaranteed to arrive. Airlines only insure up to $3000. Anything more than that is your responsibility. I don't know about anyone else, but I itemized my kit the other day and it is worth about $6000. I can't take that chance that it disappears. I ship it to the production office via UPS, insure it, and make sure that I get a cert from the production that my materials are covered in their insurance. That way when I arrive after my materials, if they are missing or damaged the production is liable.

My travel insurance through my Mastercard covers my kit over and above what the airline will cover.
Also, I pair down my kit and take only what's needed.. ie I know I won't need blue shadows on a commercial shoot when they're lookin' for clean/natural makeup so I customize a few colour palettes.
All my foundations are dispensed into small travel bottles and palettes for the creams so there is plenty left at home.
I also don't take every appliance, or every shade of hair extensions, only the ones I'm sure to need.

I have been traveling a ton lately, and have had lots of previous trial and error, and LOTS of prior damage and total mess....
First of all, I made a 2nd kit, that way if my regular kit gets lost or damaged beyond belief, I have backups of everything and doubles of a lot of things as well...
The one thing especially I always had a problem with were my shadows breaking all over, sooooo....
I actually have made my own palette with tiny airtight containers glued onto a "makeshift palette"... I  scraped shadows out of their original containers / pallettes and put them in these ( already broken haha) no damage done.

Wrap all hair products or anything that can leak into ziplocks...

Then, I pack my entire "mini kit" into a pelican case. They are a bit pricey but worth it completely.. they usually use these things for transporting expensive camera equipment, etc etc.. Most of the time they come with these foam inserts that you can customize to whatever is in it.
Virtually indestructible...
: )
The 2nd kit has come in handy for those days when I'm hired to "touch up" or "camera ready gigs" as I don't have to lug my giant kit around!

Last but not least, never let your brushes leave your side... someone stole mine once, and I would have rather my kit dissapeared, if you are like me, your brushes are your babies!

Not to mention, I have been approached 3 tmes at airports by curious photographers...who thought I might be one of them...
and ironically it became a weird a weird way to network!

Good luck all!
; )

I travel worldwide, often. I put my camera's in carryon.  Lighting is checked baggage. Airport security, in the US, insists on opening my carryon's and looking at everything.   They won't let me take a cherry pepsi through security with me....bummer doood!!!

Security in other countries doesn't care what I have in my bags...they just smile.

In Taiwan airport security let me watch the monitors and ask dozens of questions about what they could actually see inside my bags...that was very informative.

I'm more paranoid of the lost luggage situation than things breaking.

I just got back from Spain a few weeks ago and did the same as Diana.  Just make sure everything is well padded and nothing can move around and you will be fine.

I went to Italy last year too and that was the first time I had travelled with my kit.  It was just after the security alerts so I couldnt carry on anything, I was a nervous wreck but everything was fine!

Here's a link to my kit as it is now.  I'll be sure to wrap it all up in bubble wrapy goodness.  Now keep in mind, I'm just a fledgling makeup artist.  I still have to add to my kit, but I get by.  I plan on getting the FA foundations and brush set before I leave.  (and yes that's a MAC eyeshadow palette, but I have a sticker covering the MAC Logo, and the eyeshadows in it are actually Smashbox and Millani...)

I got one of those travel shower bags, the ones that unfold and have the hanger on the top. Got a cute black and hot pink one from walmart. Put everything in there and wrapped it in towels on the top of my luggage.
Carried my eye shadow pallets and hair straightner in my carry on. My brushroll was just fins as it was. I was paranoid though : )

If you’re carrying your kit on a plane beware of the limitations listed below for liquids and creams.

TSA implemented the 3-1-1 policy in response to the thwarted liquid explosive bomb plot in the United Kingdom in August of 2006.   Today, the wide-spread acceptance of that policy demonstrates the international understanding of the threat to aviation from liquid explosives.  Countries around the world support TSA's approach to reducing the amount of liquids, gels and aerosols passengers can bring in their carry-ons. The rule limits the volume of liquids, gels and aerosols to bottles 3 ounces or smaller (or 100 ml), in 1 quart-sized zip top bag, and 1 bag per traveler.

They will make you throw away or check items over 3oz.  Each traveler is allowed 1 Qt bag capacity.

This happened to me also, except the security people were idiots, and they TOUCHED the mascara wands, eyeshadows, brushes, creams, EVERYTHING with bare hands, even after asking them to just use some purell, or some gloves =\

When I got back, I filed a complaint, along with an itemized list of everything they touched, and the airline sent me a $1800 check to avoid me filing a lawsuit I had threatened to file for misuse of "client" property. [Would have never though of this, but I talked to my law professor, and he said it's been done]

Suggestion;

Ship it FEDEX 2cd day air.  I do that all the time with equipment that I don't want people messing with.

Your kit looks good Kaylene!  Just make sure to secure the items within your plastic containers as well by stuffing with foam 'pleanuts', bubble wrap, air popped corn or anything else 'soft' to protect 'em.

And Lucy... we keep missing each other.. you were in Italy last year when I was in Spain, and Spain this year when I was in Italy...  What gives??  Are you avoiding me?!?!? wink
