Hi MUA,

I am flying in a week and I have already searched online at United and American Airlines websites but it wasn't specific enough regarding makeup.

It said we are allowed to carry on mascara, lotion, creams, soap, perfume, lip gloss, liquid foundation...

they only have to be small enough to fit into 1 clear plastic bag up to 3/4oz

but it did not say about compact powders or eyeshadows...
if it did not say on the list should i assume they are not ok to carry on or what?

does anyone know about those ietms?

your help is appreciated

Thank You!

The restrictions are only on liquids, I believe. So powders should be ok. Liquids (foundations, etc.) have to be in small containers. Oh, and scissors, metallic nail files are a no-no. Hope this helps...

It's currently liquids and creams, and all must fit into 3.3 oz (100ml?) bottles, and all those must fit into ONE quart size ziploc baggie, without effort (no stuffing).

It was 3 oz bottles, but they increased it slightly sometime before May.

Anything that doesn't fit into the ziploc must be in checked bags.

Powders are fine to carryon.  Pallette knives, scissors, tweezers, etc go in checked luggage.

Also, word of warning.  Don't carryon a train case.  Use a standard carryon luggage.  A train case is an easy way to get further searched.  Happened to me everytime I carried it.  Now, my makeup carryon doesn't get searched.

Oh, and I also have bad luck with disposable mascara wands.  They get me searched too, because they look like gun cleaners.  So consider those for checked bags.

The airlines all got a little bit different rules, and some more strict than other. The rules can normally be found on their website.

Maybe, but it's not usually the airline who's searching bags through the security checkpoint.  The TSA guys don't know to follow one airline's rules over another.  That might only work out if the terminal you're entering is built for only one airline, and that is only true if the city is a hub.

I flew with some models last year and they were made to discard some of their powders and foundations at the check point.

Best way to avoid that is to pack those items in your checked luggage, and keep the absolute minimum in your carry-on bag.

I try not to chance it.  I bubble wrap EVERYTHING and check it.  I was told to throw a few things away in the past, so now I just securely pack and check all of my makeup.

The security tjeck is not always logical. They did not discover a small screwdriver I had in my bag (forgot I had it), but was told to put my single lip gloss in one of those bags...

I've had success and no stops (for some reason I've *never* been stopped even when I ran too late to check bags and just took my *whole* kit through I miraculously got by - I probably just ruined that streak :-) with my routine of checking *all* liquids and creams - and carrying on all powders (and brushes).

That also helps my sanity because if my checked luggage falls into that black hole, I'll still have a good portion of my kit and brushes with me (though I'll have some pricey foundations etc. to replace - may this never happen...amen)

I would put your liquids in you checked luggage.  and powders into your carry on's.
Or you can pack your stuff soooo whell that you can check it all and then you dont have to worrie. I also get stickers form the air line or the hospital that say "cation medical equiptment", or "fragile" and cover my luggage in them..
there is another thread about how to pack your make-up case for travel..... some where on this site smile

thank you so much for everyone who responded! this does help...

i was just worried about my powders breaking if i check them because it happened once before although i packed them wrapped in towels and such...i thought i was careful enough put powders ended up breaking.

i guess bubble wrap may be a good idea.

i certainly hope that if i carry on powders they don't make me throw them out?

i used the large orange Fragile stickers last time i flew and had to check all my makeup...but it ended up breaking still. i dont think the Fragile stickers work lol.

wish me luck!

smile

thanks everyone

This is what I do..I use my normal kit bag which I purcahsed at Target (see in kit bag organizing thread) and I take all of my liquids out of my kit

foundations, highlighters, etc
liquid liner, gel liners, mascaras
lip products, lip palettes, etc
moisturizers, wipes, water cans, anything liquid at all

I put all these items into smaller makeup bags (tape around bottle and spray caps) and then I put those into my checked-in suitcase.

In my kit bag which I take onto the plane, I have my shadows, powders, BRUSHES, palettes of blushes and eye shadows, cotton buds, mascara wands, etc.

I have travelled 6 times in the last 7 months this way and only had my kit bag searched twice ( 2 out of 14 times not bad). The search was painless and quick..they asked me what was in it, I said makeup, they did a swab test and let me go on my way.

Hope this helps! Sorry its not more articulate, I am writing too fast..lol

You're lucky to take your brushes on your person...

Airbrushes have to be checked... that's hundreds of dollars in 3 guns and parts that I have to hope don't freak out the x-rays.

And, I try to mail the liquid body paints ahead. Airlines say "no paint" and again, at a certain point, I don't want someone's interpretation of the "rules" to be the ultimate decider between a "color cosmetic liquid" and "paint".

I've been traveling a lot over the past month. I typically check all of my kit liquids - liquid foundations, lip glosses, primers, etc. - everything liquid except for a few personal items (my own foundation, etc.) which I put in a clear plastic bag and keep out with my laptop.  All powders, cream palates and lipsticks I have been carrying on in my makeup bag. I was told when I got to the airport in Sacramento that only liquids needed to go into the clear plastic bags. They had no issue with creams or lipsticks. I've been through the full random security screening twice now and no one has ever said a thing about my makeup, so I assume I'm doing things right. smile

are there any makeup products that are illegal to take on a plane?
i have heard that brush cleaner and isopropyl alcohol aren't even allowed in check in bags.
I'm wanting to get some sfx products while in LA and bring them back to Australia and i'm really concerned about the chemicals in the products causing hassles, even in my checked bags.
i've tried to look it up online and i'm just really confused, can anyone give me some straight forward answers, from experience.
thanks so much.

You cannot carry or pack in your bags any flammable (brush cleaner, etc.) at all. It must be shipped separately (UPS, FED EX, et al) and it is very expensive to ship. Probably wouldn't be worth it. I seem to recall someone telling me that it cost them $60 to ship a gallon of alcohol within the U.S. I can't imagine how much it would be going to another continent.

i've shipped makeup and flown all over the world.. and with the exception of india.. where isoproyl alchohol is next to impossible to find.. (and incredibly expensive if you can find it) I generally leave all alchohol at home.

you CAN get ethenol most any country.. and it performs very similarly to isopropy alcohol for most uses.. otherwise known in the USA as Everclear!!!!
A decent alternative is one you can get at Home Depot or Lowes.. that's Denatured Alchhol.  YOu can use it like any other alcohol.  As far as I know.. it's just ethenol that's been chemically altered to keep it from being drinkable.

you can do most anythign you'd do with alcohol but thin Medical Adhesive..

I just flew back and forth from LA with my check bags containing my alcohol and brush cleaners. I believe as long as the items are packed securely and under a certain size there is no problem with checking those items.

I won't carry full-size foundations. I use 1/4 oz refillable airbrush bottles and pump foundation inside. That way, if my luggage is lost, the most expensive pieces are still at home, just a little less full:)

I've been on a number of flights in the last couple of months with my entire makeup kit, full (plastic) bottles of foundation, airbrush compressors, lipsticks, creams, powders, hair products, scissors, full size hair products, everything, and it all is fine as long as it's packed tightly and checked in. I've basically confiscated my husbands photography Tutto case since it has the padded velcro sections that I can place around my makeup like a dream.

Now of course if I wasn't such a procrastinator I might have actually searched for travel size items and consolidated the bigger items, but I am. What can I say? The point is, they will go through as checked. big_smile

I had my carry-on bag emptied at dublin airport because I was carrying a tube of mascara, the wand must have been metal because they got all uptight that I was carrying what they thought was a pipe cleaner.

This wasn't that long after 9/11 though so security was obviously going to be a bit higher.
