When I'm applying makeup I've noticed I stand funny. I'm not sure if it's for balance or what. But I always have one hand on left hip (hip jutting out)  or on the backside of the models head.
Just wondering what your stance is and if you have any weird quirks during your application process?

LOL this is funny.   I never touch the model or the talent on top or back of their heads, sometimes they get weird about that.  Unless of course I am doing their hair.  I tend to stand on my tippy toes and bite my tounge, I am already 5 foot 11 so standing on my tippy toes is pretty funny since I am already towering over my clients.

Yeah I keep trying to break myself of the habit, its almost like I'm holding them in position or something. Rather awkard but A great improvement from wiping excess makeup in their hair! Yeah that was terrible LOL!

Standing properly will save your back in this business.

I always try and spread my weight evenly between both feet to minimise the pressure on either hip.  If the chair is low I sit or knee to do the makeup.

I dont have a particular stance though.

I dont rest my hands anywhere on the models, its not comfortable for them and its slightly unprofessional looking.

People always want to offer you a chair. I always work standing up. I don't tend to hold the back of the head or top, but I will hold the chin in position when doing certain things. I like the model sitting down, me above her. I don't mind bending a bit. I need to be able to pretty much get up in her face...so that is what works!

Me too! Something about birds eye view makes it easier for me to do makeup.
I dont like the directors chairs for applying makeup or doing hair.

I actullay hate bending so a directors's chair, artist chair, even a stool works great for me.  I'm with Lucy, I try to stand balanced to avoid being in pain for days after and I only touch the client when I must.  I try not to rest upon them at all.

I like a nice counter height chair for makeup.  And I always find myself holding my breath and then getting hiccups.  I think I am trying not to breathe on them...

I have a very tall directors chair that I use while doing make-up, thus my back doesnt hurt but serval times I dont have room for the chair or we are shooting on location and I dont have a little man to carry all of my stuff, When I stand I usually have a fairly wide stance , the more "tripody" the bestter for me, i dont rest on my talents heads, as that will either be uncomfotable or the hair diva will hit me smile
I do apply a little finger to the cheeck when steding my hand , this also helps them know that I am comming in with a brush and to hold still.
I ussually look very concerened even when I am not smile My hubby calls it my make-up face smile

LOL I stand like I'm waiting for the bus LMAO!  When applying lipstick I have my hand on the model's chin.  Sometimes I put my left hand on my waist but the back of my hand is on it instead of the palm.  I put makeup on the back of my hand so you should see the amount of shirts that I have with makeup stains all on the same side right around the waist area.  I forget I put makeup back there LOL.

I pretty much come home looking like a painter and half the time I dont notice until my husband says "you have another stain on your shirt" LOL

Talent have been known to ask me if I'm ok or if I would like for them to stand up. When I bring my directors chair, it's not a problem, but if they sit in a normal chair, and I stand (i'm 5'8) I tend to bend over and crain my neck in weird positions so I can see different angles of the face. I'm sure it looks painful and strange...

Apparently, when I was learning to write and draw, I had a certain "look" of determination on my face.  It's carried over to doing hair and makeup.  I guess it's my creative face!  Also, I'm 5' 2" and rarely wear a heeled shoe.  I have a tall director's chair but if they talent is tall, I have to tippy toe to reach them sometimes, even when they're sitting in the chair.  When they're standing up it's always a challenge.  I've learned to appreciate shorter talent!

I've done this!  Hate it, lol!  I wear a lot of black out of habit, and there's nothing worse than looking down and realizing that you're wearing almost as much makeup on your clothes as the model is on her face.  ;P  This is one habit I actively try to break...

I'm really short, so I'm on my tippy toe all the time...I also can't breathe, because I hate  people breathing on me, so I don't want to breathe on them. I may hold the chin rarely. I try not to touch the rest of the face too much, and I do the "pinkie on the cheek"thing as well to stabilize myself and th prepare the model I'm going to touch their face. I may also put a powder puff on my pinkie with the velour part resting on their cheeck for more support, and also not to smear their powder/blush/foundation

I definitely get the creative face, but I just get very focused.  I have the same height problem (5'2).  Directors chairs are usually TOO tall if the model is tall.  I almost prefer to bend down a little then to reach WAY up and try to apply.  I always feel like I can't see the top of their face well enough.  haha.  I do tend to find myself in terribly awkward positions.  I gotta be more careful or my back is going to give up.

I usually have one hand on my hip, mostly just because it feels weird to just let it hang at my side; I need it to be sort of anchored to my body. Either that, or one hand is holding extra brushes or a palette. I try to stand up straight, but I'm pretty tall as is, so a model usually gets a bit shorter when she sits down.

Wow... I need to start paying attention to what I do. I definitely don't hold the models head or anything like that. I know I have the 'makeup face' as well... with enough photos to prove it!! tongue

Since I do hair and makeup, I usually have them sit in a normal (shorter) chair for the hair and then get them to hop up on a taller directors chair for the makeup. I just stand balanced with comfy shoes.

I remember when I was new... wearing 4" pumps to do makeup in thinking it'd be cute... that got old quick!!

I always lean my head to the side when I step back to look at what Ive done.
As if its really gonna look that different if I dont tilt my head.
I dont know why I do this.
At the end of the day my neck is always in pain.

OOH!
And I always hold my breath when Im doing the makeup!
I step back and deeply exhale and the model thinks its an exhale of stress.
...LOL

Nope- just holding my breath for some strange reason.

I do this exact same this while styling hair!  I sigh constantly because I forget to breath properly.  People are always asking me if I'm okay.  I also forget to blink and then my contacts dry up and then my eyes water profusely to compensate.  Then along with the sighs I look like I'm crying.  haha.

Yeah this is really becoming a problem for me! I have even started putting makeup on my hand when I do my own makeup. Of course I forget all about it and I end up having makeup on the back of my shirt. I just figured I will  make "pallette hand" my trademark so when I am out at a party or the store and people ask what the heck  that is on my hand and I can proudly say "I'm a makeup artist of America"!

The only times I have worked in chair was once for runway (really low chairs and lots of girls to do!) and when I sprained my ankle.

My stance for some reason is usually head tilted to one side and if I am doing something detailed, I always have my hand on one hip..lol..so embarrassing!

*Edited..I also step back, squint and stare at the model through the entire shoot checking my work..haha

I get up so close when doing eyes sometimes it's unnerving ... eyeball to eyeball.  Another thing I do is hold up the foundation palette, shut one eye and pick one thru the palette...funny thing is...I'm usually dead right on the first pick!  I love those cinema secrets palettes.

lol Lottie I've found myself doing the hand on the hip thing lately too. Not sure why! lol It's like I gotta hold myself steady cuz I do that head tilt as well.

I always stand to the left, I do the dang head tilt too, I never put my fingers all over their face, and I've gotten used to chairs that are below eye level. I'll just have the subject raise their chin a lil if needed for a short time. I've found one chair easier since I do hair and makeup and when I have a hairstylist in there it's easy for them to work on hair while I'm doing makeup. I've gotten quite used to my hydraulic chair in our studio that goes high or low. I'll pump it higher for makeup if not working around another hair stylist.

Funny thing is that me being able to do makeup in low chairs comes in handy when I go to a job and all they have are regular chairs, I'm not worried as I'm pretty used to it. I know I know, my back is gonna kill me in the future, but for now the hand on the hip helps. lol tongue

when i'm not doing anything i tend to put my hands on my hip.. but for some reason when i'm working on someone i never do that.. i do have a habit of touching their face right before the brush touches their eyes so they know ahead of time which eye i'm working on and they don't clench their eyes.. and i get made fun of when using curling iron i always ask 3 times as i increase the pressure each time.. hehe..

Hey, I see you lay people down as well, it's the best! Really good when there's an opportunity to do that. I also will step back and examine my work to see if everything is symmetrical, and I have to warn the subject, like "no, no, I'm not giving you a dirty look, I just want to make sure it looks good!"

Hahaha you guys crack me up.. and unfortunately, I look just as goofy while working wink

I definitely hold my breath if I stand very close or above the face, it's not something I do intentionally though, I think it has to do with not wanting to breathe on the talent and it helps me focus on applying the makeup better.

I do sometimes lift the eyebrow or the space between the eyelid and the eyebrow, just to stretch out the skin a little and make it smoother to work on. I also have the talent almost closing their eyes while I apply mascara. That way I can softly press up/back the lid with one finger so the lashes spread out, and get in really close to the lashroots without making the talent nervous about having a mascarabrush all up in her eye.

Other than that I try not to touch the talent at all.

Also, before starting I do the "staring with a serious face" to really see the features of the face and to see what colours to use. I always make sure to mention that I'm not staring because something's wrong just so I won't freak the talent out haha!

If I can sit, I rather sit, mostly to spare my back. I have a friend who can't do makeup anymore because her back just can't take it -so I try to think of her every time I catch myself standing with all of my weight on one leg or in a weird position!

smile

Haven't paid much attention to the way I stand, but I've been told more than once that I completely cock my head toward my right shoulder...my left eye is stronger than my right, so it's like I try to see my work only with my left eye.  Usually, when I'm doing that...I take a big step back and have been known to back into people walking by or people watching me work that I didn't know were behind me.

I get soooo into what I'm doing that I don't even notice what's going on around me at all, when usually , I've very observant.  Several years ago, when I worked at a Nordstrom near DC, supposedly this very elaboratly-dressed pimp and his posse paraded down the aisle, right next to me.  According to my coworkers, everyone in the department was just staring at them and afterward they all starting laughing and saying they couldn't believe what they just saw.  I had no clue, whatsoever! smile

One more funny but gross story is that many years ago, when I first started, I was putting moisturizer on someone's face with my hands, in a circular motion and somehow got too close to the nose and accidentally stuck the tip of my pinkie up the girl's nostril...very, very embarrassing!  I can't believe I'm admitting that...the girl just laughed, luckilly.
