I am planning a shoot next month and I want to do a shoot in the desert. I was thinking of shooting somewhere off the 10 freeway but I am not sure what exit to take. I do not want any buildings in the back ground.

thanks for the help

If your goin out on 10, the Jashua Tree Nat'l Park just past Palm Springs is very cool.  However, one of my favorite places down there is Death Valley (H127 off I-15).  There is a variety of rock formations, Sand Dunes, and Flats.

Yep, Joshua Tree is good...

There's also a massive dry lake off the 15, sort of west of Victorville.  Need to be careful this time of year, though... with all the rain we've been getting, it might not be DRY... might just be a lake!  : D

There's also several areas offering some nice rock formations and dry lake beds about 5-10 miles east of Victorville.  If you're going north on the I-15 towards Victorville, get off at the Bear Valley Rd Exit.  Go east and it will merge with Hwy 18.  Take Hyw 18 east further until it splits into Rabbit Springs Rd.  Take Rabbit springs Rd a few miles to Barstow Rd (Hwy 247).  Turn left on 247 and head north a few miles and you'll have a large dry lakebed on your left.

Along this path, between Victorville and 247, you'll pass plenty of opportunities for shooting spots with great rock formations and small, flat dry lakebeds.  All of the rock formations that we stopped at had great dirt road access right up to the rocks.

Best regards,
John

dumont dunes near baker, and osborne outlook near glamis are the best deserts in socal.  osborne is a bit of a drive (past salton sea), but worth it if you have the time.

this photo was taken outside osborne outlook at ocotillo wells.

thanks for all the help. I have a couple other questions I will be shooting with a fire breather / performer and was wondering what wind conditions are like at this time during night and if I shot at joushua tree (or any of these locations) are there park officials that would come by???
