I wouldn't recomend them. I had a glue in set after a disaster touching up my mohawk. They were so gross. They looked good in, but would mat up really easily. They matted when i didn't wash them, they matted when i washed them. I couldnt brush them, or they would get pulled out. I had to take them out, wash my hair and the extensions seperatly, comb and style them seperately, and then glue them back in; usually about every other day. Stupidly time consuming.

I'd recomend just going with the pixie for a little bit and trying to shoot something edgy.

I recommend a good wig shop. There's some pretty  nice stuff out there. Get human hair. It's more expensive, but you can have it cut and styled different ways and you take it off like a hat and go right back to your pixie. The extensions get so expensive and they are super temporary.

It depends on where you live in California. If you have the money there's two excellent shops that do them that I know of in San Francisco alone. I've had extensions six times (two times by the same extension artist x two plus two times by people who did bad jobs) so I know of what I speak.

Let me know where you are and I can check around and see if any of my friends know of people to recommend.

Personally I love extensions, but it's definitely a personal thing. If you go for natural hair, it will cost more, but it will look great and not tangle up us much if you go the route I always do (bright color and lots of it). But it's a science and just like any good MUA knows how to make anybody look gorgeous, a good extension stylist can do your hair and make it look totally natural.

If that's what you want.

Right now I have a mostly shaved head and I just can't wait until my hair grows long enough for me to get them again. :-)

Could I ask  here,   just for information,
Does the new word edgy
Does that mean
the old butch style of
too short to do anything else, but
put on a little paste wax  (butch wax, Bryl cream)
and point differnt parts
in different
directions,
or does it mean
that you cut the already too short hair
with a straight edge
and make it look like it is cut in a haphazard
self mutilating style
or
is it just
edgy,
you know,
edgy.

Never mind,
I really didnt want to know.

Hey there!

All of the photos in my port are of me with extensions... I prefer the fusion method (strand method), but I've used both clip in and glue-in weft. I have put them in myself every time, so I didn't spend a whole lot.

My advice would be to purchase GOOD hair - remi/cuticle hair. You can probably get a pack for about $200 (get the pre-tipped ones). I did that and purchased the Revlon Color Lites (sp?) kit and used the tool in there. DO NOT TOUCH THE HAIR THAT COMES IN THE REVLON KIT. It is NOT real and will mat up in the most terrible way you could imagine... Not to mention that you can not style it with heat tools! Get a friend to help you and you should be fine (unless you're hair challenged... In which case you should give up on extensions all together, unless you want to do the clip-in thing)

All of that being said, if your hair really IS pixie style, I would suggest that you wait for it to grow out... I know that is hard to do, but if you put in extensions when your natural hair is THAT short, they will probably look absolutely terrible becuase you won't have enough hair to cover the glue/clips...

Sorry for the essay response, but I *wish* that someone had helped me out when I was looking for extensions!!! PM me if you need any more help.

By edgy I mean anything not typically accepted by the powers that be or the "establishment." Quit being a bitch just cause I didn't respond to your skizzy comment on my pic.

Try looking online. Don't do glue in! Have them sewn in OR have clip ons. Sewn ins work better. Good Extentions are going to cost like 300 or more

Kinda on subject here(and really wanted some advice here as well),getting extensions/wigs wet.
My style of photography involves the girl getting in the water and for the most part, just her head sticking out of the water, thus, most of her hair getting wet(which I kinda require because the contrast between wet and dry is a cool look for what I do),and I seek out girls with long hair for my shoots
I did one shoot with a model with obvious extensions(they were pre-curled),and the hair did not look natural when in the water(ie,change from dry to wet didn't yeally happen, just looked "clumpy, she did not end up in my profile because of this)
I was kinda toying with the idea of purchasing a wig or 2,especially if I hire a model that requires that I spend at least 2 hours with her,so she can do 2 shoots in the water without having to spend most of the time restyling/drying the hair for a second shoot in the water.
I was wondering if any girls or photographers had any experience with extensions/wigs getting wet,and if that is a good idea on my part
check out my profile to see what I mean

Well as I stated before, I use wigs. You can get a "wet and wavy wig" which looks good for the wet look, but she may have to take a little of her own hair out, and it would be better if her hair actually matched the texture. You must use human hair, because it does natural things, unlike synthetic. I recently purchased two wigs and together they cost me around  $200, but you can style them and take them to the wig shop and have them cut into different styles. you can color them too.

All wigs are not made like that. But from what i know (I'm no guru), I think it would be better if she used what you call a "half wig" for a wet look situation. You just take out a small portion of your hair. Unless the wig has bangs, you will see the wig line if she doesn't smooth a little of hair over it. You can always photoshop it out though.

I've gotten wigs wet and it depends on the wig. Human hair costs more, of course, but you can do so much more with it. Unfortunately, if you are into funky colors, it will hold the color just as long as any real hair so it's not worth it for me.

Saying that however, I've had great luck with wigs and water. Smartest thing when wig shopping is to ask questions because most wig sellers I've dealt with know which wigs can be styled and which can't, etc.

Extensions and water for me have always gotten along. I've also tended to go for the higher end fake color ones though. Wonder if I should post the ones from my wedding from here...

Pink and white and down to my butt. Second best set I ever had.

I guess I would have to take a girl out shopping with me to try out styles
I would probably get both with bangs, one in one of those layered(I think that is what it is called) longish bang look that is popular, and one with an 80's style
or something

I know this thread turned a bit away from extensions and more towards wigs, but I just thought I'd mention that I looove extensions.
My favorite method is micro-rings- the supplies are cheap and installing them is very simple.  Usually hair for the ring method needs to be "tipped" and pre-tipped hair is often very expensive, but luckily it's very easy to tip it yourself.
Synthetic hair is cheaper than human and, if you get the high-quality stuff, actually looks better and holds up longer than human.  Not to mention your range of colors is practically infinite.

I'll just use this opportunity to pimp plastikhaar.ch
Best quality syntheic hair around, there's a North America shop too so you can avoid the ridiculous shipping from Switzerland, but I don't have the link to that.

Also drlocks.net has just about all the supplies you could possibly need, as well as tutorials and instructions on a variety of methods.

Wow, this post turned out to be a lot longer than I was planning it to be.  Oh well.

i loved my hair extensions when i had them. i did the midwest hair show and cut my hair too short so i got the glue in exentions and those lasted for 6 months for me.  but sadley my extensions wouldve costed $1000 $350 for the hair alone if i wouldve paid for them, luckily i bought my friend lunch and that was her payment.  if you look in my port the pics that i have with a white tank and black booty short by amie photography, i was wearing hair extensions in all of those.  i'm buying the clip in ones soon and a few of my friends have them and to me they look natural.

I was actually talking with a roomate today about extensions and she gave me the name of a great place she buys human hair from for really cheap. Of course...it depends on the color and if you get mink or french hair. (That sounds wierd I know. lol)

Here's the website you can get them and the section you're looking for:

http://www.hisandher.com/hair_extension … n_001.html

I plan to go to their store on Wilshire soon. If I do end up buying anything, I'll tell you what I think of the hair.

Just a word of caution....I would go with the clip in's. I had super expensive "won't harm your natural hair" extensions..the heat fused kind and now I'm......bald. Ok, not really bald but I had to chop my hair to my collar bone because it was paper thin. I had them for a year and a half, several sets and now I regret it. I HAD to have my hair cut off because it was thin and nasty and transparent. Now i'm back to square one : )

Just wanted to warn you before you made the investment. Go with the clip-ins. No matter who says "they won't harm your hair" is lying. I am living proof and I've heard other horror stories and never thought it would happen to me but it did.

I'll be using the clip in's for shoots from now on.

Jessica Simpson just started a new "clip on" hair line. It's a bit pricey, but if you can find an absolute match I'm sure it's great.

Side note: cheap hair extensions can get really gross really fast.

If you want semi-permanent ones (that will stay in for 1-3 months), be prepared to spend $200-300.  You can definitely save money if you learn how to put them in yourself, but the learning process can be awkward (depending on the method).  Imagine trying to heat-bond the top of an extension braided in on the back of your head without help.

Clip-in extensions are good for photoshoots or clubbing.  I used to occasionally wear wool dreadlocks made by PsySheep (people always thought they were fully attached to my scalp), but these days, I prefer a more subtle look and use Manic Panic colored hair strips I've won through the modelling contest on howcool.com.

When I was bald, I used wigs a lot.  They are fun and can change your look dramatically in an instant.

When I had an undercut (everything shaved except a patch on top), I used to put spiked hairpieces/scrunchies around the topknot.  5 minutes worth of styling, max.

Growing out is a bitch.  I've been growing the undercut out since December (after cutting the top down to ~2") and ALMOST have enough hair to put into a single ponytail.  Still requires pigtails to get all of the hair in.

I have clip ins and they work GREAT! I love them and wear them everday. They're SO much cheaper than glue in ones and don't do any damage to your hair. The only thing that's crappy about them is if you're on a date with someone and they go to touch your hair and they can feel them kind of hard to explain! They come in tons of colors and textures too so definately give em a shot!

I just wanted to point out that I HATE the micro rings. I had that done in Korea and felt it was horrible. When I got it taken out, surprise, my hair came with it. For a very short term hairstyle, if you must use extensions go the way of glue. The problem with that is that you have to have a professional to take it out for you. You could try to do it yourself, but I do not recommend it. I like to do a sew in, glue in comb. I have been sewing in my own and others weaves for the past ten years and I like this combo because you get the strength of a sew in with the neatness of a glue in.

Well I guess everyone has their preferences, I hate glue because it ripped all my hair out.
Just out of curiosity, why did the microrings rip your hair out?  How did they/you take them out?

First time I had microrings and took them out I freaked because there was so much of my natural hair coming out, I thought I must have giant bald spots everywhere.  But then I realized it was natural, because you lose 50-100 hairs a day on average, but the microrings were keeping them from coming out in my hairbrush, bed, etc.

(Not saying this is what was happening to you, just making fun of myself a bit.)

oh gods, totally. i've pretty much had an undercut since i was 15.. grew it all out once by cutting everything short and letting it go.. then i did it again.. bah! so i didn;t want to chop all the rest of my hair off the second time, so i grew it out, and had to tie my ponytail so that nothing was sticking out.. total hell. it took me over a year to get it all shoulder length.
