Meant for the thread title to be: "Three 20th Century Bands that will be in history"

500 years from now - which bands from the second half of the 20th century do you think will be found in the history books?  My votes would be for:

  The Beatles (a lock)

  The Rolling Stones

  The Doors

I'm not necessarily saying that these are the BEST 3 bands from the second half of the 20th century...but I think these 3 are the most historically significant.

I'd replace The Doors with Queen.

I put The Doors in my list because of the significant impact they had on our culture - besides every thing else, just look at how many significant movie and television soundtracks their music was a part of!  (and their music continues to appear in soundtracks to this day, decades after Jim Morrison died).

Beatles - Most important band ever!

Zep - Most important and influential rock act!

Eagles - America's premier rock act, also best selling rock album in history!

Benny Goodman was great, as was Glen Miller...but they were 1st half of 20th century.  This thread is about most historical bands of 2nd half 20th century.

Yes, I see the point, but - I think - The Doors are  much more significant from the US perspective.

Queen was a first (?) band with global and globally demographic appeal.

I see a lot of Led Zeppelin and Queen, and I agree they are both VERY significant bands, worthy of contention...however, let me give you just one example of the impact the Doors have had on culture:

Try to imagine the movie "Apocalypse Now" without the Doors in the soundtrack.  I'm not trying to say that "Apocalypse Now" was a great movie, but it was certainly a significant movie in terms of cultural events.  Now extrapolate that further...'sorry, but I can't really imagine the second half of the 20th century without the Doors in it...

That's okay, because I'm going to say it's a great movie.

It's not just a great movie, it's a goddamned awesome movie.

Queen...just NO!

Some great pop hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, and not taking anything away from Freddie Mercury, but what else?

The Beatles created at least 20 songs that literally turned the music world upside down!

Ditto Zep, well maybe not 20, but many, many!

Eagles literally perfected easy going rock and that California road movie sound!

Maybe  because you are American and look at it from American cultural perspective.

There could certainly be some truth in that...but the Doors were a hell of lot more than just an American phenomenon!  They were incredibly popular all over the world!

Gary is right, The Doors are far more significant, even now, then Queen will ever be.

My 3 choices were based on 3 different things:

The Beatles...well, because they were so goddamned talented, you have to wonder if maybe they were aliens or something.  They simply aren't/weren't mortal human being men.

The Rolling Stones...well, because they started what they started and they're still around nearly 50 years later.

The Doors...because they shaped what our world was and is - this would be a different planet now if they had never existed.

You can sway me from Queen to Led Zeppelin but not to the Doors wink

My take is that they were shaped by the times of change as much as they were shaping it - and I'd speculate that you belong to their generation. I joined the world already shaped...

I vote for Queen for bringing rock mainstream.

The 60's was like no other decade, either before or since. It will always be THE most significant decade where the music world is concerned. With the 70's a very close second!

All downhill from there, especially now!

Let's not be short sighted. Let's take a longer view. Glenn Miller. There is a lot to be said for the big band era. I also think some of the great jazz artist will live on forever. John Coltrane.... a modern Mozart. Miles Davis. Jazz is immortal.

Leonard Cohen is considered by his peers (across all musical genres) to be one of the greatest of the 20th century.

I'm a HUGE fan of Glenn Miller - his stuff was GREAT...but this thread is about the most historical bands of the SECOND HALF of the 20th century!

Billie Holiday. Nina Simone. Janis Joplin.

It would be really nice to see some ladies mentioned.

Men do not "own" 20th century music history.

Gary, you should have made it 5 or even 10 bands.

Cream - The only living guitar god, still kicking ass!

The Who - Keith Moon, say no more!

Creedence - John Fogerty, maybe the most amazing voice...ever, imho!

The Beach Boys - Does fun pop get any better than this?

Personally, I LOVED "Apocalypse Now".  It didn't have much to do with reality, but it was pretty damn entertaining.

I totally have to wonder if it would have been nearly as popular without the Doors "This is the End" on the opening soundtrack.

Would not make much difference IMO if you were not already emotionally invested into this music. As cliche as it is, Wagner makes the movie.

You could argue, that The Doors were The Doors because of Jim Morrison, and you could argue that The Rolling Stones were The Rolling Stones due to having Mick Jagger.

So, while those might technically be "bands," they derived their identities through their seminal vocalists.

No one would give a flying fuck about Big Brother and the Holding Company, if they hadn't been fronted by Janis Joplin.

Ok, let's give you the benefit of the doubt, so men don't own the 20th century, can you name one female band that might have done?

Only one comes to mind is The Supremes.
