Yes, I see the point, but - I think - The Doors are  much more significant from the US perspective.

Queen was a first (?) band with global and globally demographic appeal.

Try to imagine the movie "Apocalypse Now" without the Doors in the soundtrack.  I'm not trying to say that "Apocalypse Now" was a great movie, but it was certainly a significant movie in terms of cultural events. There could certainly be some truth in that...but the Doors were a hell of lot more than just an American phenomenon!  They were incredibly popular all over the world!

Personally, I LOVED "Apocalypse Now".  It didn't have much to do with reality, but it was pretty damn entertaining.

I totally have to wonder if it would have been nearly as popular without the Doors "This is the End" on the opening soundtrack.

Would not make much difference IMO if you were not already emotionally invested into this music. As cliche as it is, Wagner makes the movie.

So, while those might technically be "bands," they derived their identities through their seminal vocalists.

Ok, let's give you the benefit of the doubt, so men don't own the 20th century, can you name one female band that might have done?

Only one comes to mind is The Supremes.
