Three 20th Century Bands that be in history books
Meant for the thread title to be: "Three 20th Century Bands that will be in history" 500 years from now - which bands from the second half of the 20th century do you think will be found in the history books? My votes would be for: The Beatles (a lock) The Rolling Stones The Doors I'm not necessarily saying that these are the BEST 3 bands from the second half of the 20th century...but I think these 3 are the most historically significant. Mar 23 13 03:09 pm Link I'd replace The Doors with Queen. Mar 23 13 03:11 pm Link MKPhoto wrote: I put The Doors in my list because of the significant impact they had on our culture - besides every thing else, just look at how many significant movie and television soundtracks their music was a part of! (and their music continues to appear in soundtracks to this day, decades after Jim Morrison died). Mar 23 13 03:14 pm Link Gary Melton wrote: No Sex Pistols? Mar 23 13 03:25 pm Link Beatles, Led, Floyd. Mar 23 13 04:04 pm Link Beatles - Most important band ever! Zep - Most important and influential rock act! Eagles - America's premier rock act, also best selling rock album in history! Mar 23 13 04:08 pm Link Benny Goodman Orchestra - Dominated the music scene for a decade - and helped make swing an jazz into mainstream music forces. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hel9zo9AFc4 Mar 23 13 04:28 pm Link Vintagevista wrote: Benny Goodman was great, as was Glen Miller...but they were 1st half of 20th century. This thread is about most historical bands of 2nd half 20th century. Mar 23 13 04:33 pm Link Gary Melton wrote: My bad.. Mar 23 13 04:35 pm Link Gary Melton wrote: Yes, I see the point, but - I think - The Doors are much more significant from the US perspective. Mar 23 13 04:40 pm Link I see a lot of Led Zeppelin and Queen, and I agree they are both VERY significant bands, worthy of contention...however, let me give you just one example of the impact the Doors have had on culture: Try to imagine the movie "Apocalypse Now" without the Doors in the soundtrack. I'm not trying to say that "Apocalypse Now" was a great movie, but it was certainly a significant movie in terms of cultural events. Now extrapolate that further...'sorry, but I can't really imagine the second half of the 20th century without the Doors in it... Mar 23 13 04:56 pm Link Gary Melton wrote: That's okay, because I'm going to say it's a great movie. Mar 23 13 05:03 pm Link Cherrystone wrote: Yes Mar 23 13 05:06 pm Link Queen...just NO! Some great pop hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, and not taking anything away from Freddie Mercury, but what else? The Beatles created at least 20 songs that literally turned the music world upside down! Ditto Zep, well maybe not 20, but many, many! Eagles literally perfected easy going rock and that California road movie sound! Mar 23 13 05:11 pm Link Gary Melton wrote: Maybe because you are American and look at it from American cultural perspective. Mar 23 13 05:13 pm Link Dani Nikole Feist wrote: Again Yes!! Mar 23 13 05:20 pm Link Yosh Studio wrote: Not sure if Dani meant Yes as in the band Yes, or just yes to Zep and The Beatles? Mar 23 13 05:25 pm Link MKPhoto wrote: There could certainly be some truth in that...but the Doors were a hell of lot more than just an American phenomenon! They were incredibly popular all over the world! Mar 23 13 05:26 pm Link MKPhoto wrote: Gary is right, The Doors are far more significant, even now, then Queen will ever be. Mar 23 13 05:27 pm Link London Fog wrote: Many people have opined that Jim Morrison could not sing...yet he was absolutely one of the biggest mother-fucking forces in music in his time and ever since... Mar 23 13 05:35 pm Link Doors are one of my favorite bands ever....Light My Fire & the summer of '67 was awesome......but when stacked up against B, L, F.....they're gonna be behind them. Mar 23 13 05:39 pm Link Virtual Studio wrote: Please say you're just trolling. Mar 23 13 05:39 pm Link Cherrystone wrote: Hahaha, yeah, fucking Sex Pistols! That bunch of fuckwits! Mar 23 13 05:46 pm Link Gary Melton wrote: Agreed 1000%, totally mind blowing stuff...literally! Mar 23 13 05:47 pm Link Cherrystone wrote: My 3 choices were based on 3 different things: Mar 23 13 05:48 pm Link You can sway me from Queen to Led Zeppelin but not to the Doors Gary Melton wrote: My take is that they were shaped by the times of change as much as they were shaping it - and I'd speculate that you belong to their generation. I joined the world already shaped... Mar 23 13 05:49 pm Link The 60's was like no other decade, either before or since. It will always be THE most significant decade where the music world is concerned. With the 70's a very close second! All downhill from there, especially now! Mar 23 13 05:50 pm Link Let's not be short sighted. Let's take a longer view. Glenn Miller. There is a lot to be said for the big band era. I also think some of the great jazz artist will live on forever. John Coltrane.... a modern Mozart. Miles Davis. Jazz is immortal. Mar 23 13 05:51 pm Link Leonard Cohen is considered by his peers (across all musical genres) to be one of the greatest of the 20th century. Mar 23 13 05:55 pm Link Stanley L Moore wrote: I'm a HUGE fan of Glenn Miller - his stuff was GREAT...but this thread is about the most historical bands of the SECOND HALF of the 20th century! Mar 23 13 05:55 pm Link Stanley L Moore wrote: I tend to agree with you. Mar 23 13 05:55 pm Link Billie Holiday. Nina Simone. Janis Joplin. It would be really nice to see some ladies mentioned. Men do not "own" 20th century music history. Mar 23 13 05:56 pm Link Gary, you should have made it 5 or even 10 bands. Cream - The only living guitar god, still kicking ass! The Who - Keith Moon, say no more! Creedence - John Fogerty, maybe the most amazing voice...ever, imho! The Beach Boys - Does fun pop get any better than this? Mar 23 13 05:57 pm Link Koryn Locke wrote: None of these are bands! Mar 23 13 05:57 pm Link Koryn Locke wrote: Personally, I LOVED "Apocalypse Now". It didn't have much to do with reality, but it was pretty damn entertaining. Mar 23 13 05:58 pm Link Koryn Locke wrote: HUGE, HUGE, HUGE fan of Janis Joplin!!! Mar 23 13 05:59 pm Link Gary Melton wrote: Would not make much difference IMO if you were not already emotionally invested into this music. As cliche as it is, Wagner makes the movie. Mar 23 13 06:00 pm Link Just listen... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f775c_KgXE0 Is there a better male rock voice than this? Mar 23 13 06:01 pm Link London Fog wrote: You could argue, that The Doors were The Doors because of Jim Morrison, and you could argue that The Rolling Stones were The Rolling Stones due to having Mick Jagger. Mar 23 13 06:02 pm Link Koryn Locke wrote: Ok, let's give you the benefit of the doubt, so men don't own the 20th century, can you name one female band that might have done? Mar 23 13 06:04 pm Link |
